The United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agency says officers assigned to the Del Rio Station in the state of Texas arrested a total of 180 Haitians last week.

“Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents have apprehended immigrants from 44 countries around the world,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz on Thursday.

“Our agents, along with the assistance of our DHS (Department of Homeland Security) partners, continue to meet each new challenge as the ongoing humanitarian crisis evolves,” he added.

CBP said that, on June 11, agents assigned to the Del Rio Station arrested a group of 14 people from Haiti.

“Over the next week, Del Rio Station agents encountered increasingly larger groups of Haitian nationals, including a group of 44 on June 17,” the agency said. “In total, more than 180 people from the country of Haiti have been arrested by the US Border Patrol in Del Rio Sector in the last week.”

Prior to last week, CBP said Del Rio Sector had apprehended 17 Haitians since October 1, 2018.

It said Del Rio Sector’s total apprehensions to date this year are in excess of 36,000, already more than double the total number of arrests made during the previous fiscal year.

CBP said over 80 per cent, of 29,000 individuals arrested this year, are from about 44 countries other than Mexico.

The Del Rio Border Patrol Sector is part of the Joint Task Force-West South Texas Corridor, “which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations,” CBP said.
