Two Illegal Firearms Surrendered Under Gun Amnesty as Police Reaffirm Legitimacy of Programme
Two illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition have been surrendered so far under Antigua and Barbuda’s National Gun Amnesty initiative, according to police, who have reiterated their commitment to the programme despite recent public criticism.
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda issued a statement on Tuesday defending the amnesty as a “legitimate, transparent, and vital step” in enhancing public safety.
The clarification comes in response to attempts to discredit the initiative following a court conviction earlier this month.
Police explained that the individual in question had multiple opportunities and ample time to hand over the illegal weapon but failed to do so. The administration cautioned the public against being misled by efforts to undermine trust in the initiative.
Launched on April 7, 2025, the gun amnesty allows anyone in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition to surrender them to any police station without fear of arrest or prosecution. Individuals may also contact their nearest station to arrange for a safe handover.
“No arrests or prosecutions have resulted from the submissions made thus far,” the police noted, adding that all handovers are managed with “the highest level of confidentiality.”
Authorities are urging more citizens to participate in the programme and help create a safer environment free from illegal weapons. Further information can be obtained by contacting Police Headquarters at 462-0125.
