U.S. President Donald Trump will meet at his Florida resort on Friday with the leaders of the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Lucia to discuss Chinese “predatory economic practices” and the Venezuela situation, the White House said in a statement on Tuesday.

Trump and the Caribbean leaders will also discuss security cooperation and the potential opportunities for energy investment, the White House said.

“The President looks forward to working with countries in the region to strengthen our security cooperation and counter China’s predatory economic practices,” the White House statement said.

Washington has warned countries in the region about accepting Chinese investment. In October, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters in Mexico City that “when China comes calling it’s not always to the good of your citizens.”

“When they show up with deals that seem to be too good to be true it’s often the case that they, in fact, are,” Pompeo said.

On Venezuela, the United States has recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s interim president.

Guaido invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency in January, saying President Nicolas Maduro’s re-election was not legitimate. Most Western countries have backed Guaido as head of state.

  1. Wow, divide and rule smh……………not surprised at all though cause Caribbean Community leaders are not as United as they want us the ppl in the region to believe!!!

    • no surprise that ALLEN CHASTANET is a part of this meeting. It will come back to bite him in the ass.

    • Alex Deazle-You are always chatting some BS. If you cannot say something constructive i suggest you shut your mouth..Do you think this is you people sick petty politics??Really.

  2. So how does St Lucia fit into OECS again?

No money for liat, no calling for dialogue as a agreed with too.

OECS MUST BRING SANCTIONS ON ST LUCIA IMMEDIATELY, ITS A ROUGE OECS STATE.
1 NO LIAT FLIGHTS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
2 DROPPED FROM THE PETRO CARIB AGREEMENT IMMEDIATELY.
3 VENEZUELA SHOULD CALL ALL ITS LOANS FROM ST LUCIA.
THIS IS A GOOD and proper start

    • Good question! The St. Lucia PM is a sellout. No backbone, no scruples, no loyalty to regional interests. Can’t wait to see the back end of him come next general elections.

  3. The U.S. is losing global influence fast and I am fine with Antigua have no relationship with the U.S., except us welcoming their tourists to spend their money in our country. Over the coming decade, the U.S. influence globally will continue to go down. The global future is countries like China, and other fast-growing countries from Asia. As far as I am concerned, I consider it an honor that our PM isn’t invited – better for us to save the airfare cost. PM Browne is correct to state that the U.S. does not have the right to interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries.

  4. Trump is a loose cannon on a tilting deck. He is a disaster in every sense of the word. Unfortunately we are stuck with him for the present but this too shall pass. Take anything he says with a truck full of salt.

  5. This was a foregone conclusion and I had actually predicted this. Uncle Sam will meet with those who support their stance and look out, the US will begin it’s economic warfare against those countries who will not heed their call. It is really the divide and rule strategy that bugs me and here again, the lifeless, hopeless, useless Caricom is all over the place. Amazing…..four member countries of Caricom meeting with Trump…..Bahamas, Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Lucia……the rest can go to hell.

  6. Wow! Not pleased with what’s happening in Venezuela at present or the Chinese apparent aim to recolonize the Caribbean, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this planned meeting is a ruse to promote opened dessention among the Caribbean leaders by offering much more needed assistance those whom he meets and squeeze the **** out of the others.
Lord have mercy if a so eh go cause our government back Muduro and lub Chinese and Merica is a deadly enemy fu challing.

  7. The last time I attempted to post my opinion on this site it was not posted, let me see if censorship is happening at this online newspaper. Wow Donald Trump calling home his boys from the Caribbean. Let me see if Russia and China call home their dictators, the one from Antigua and the other from St.Vincent, this show down in the Caribbean will show us how divided we are. Antiguans better prepare themselves to eating plastic rice from China and stand in line like they do in Russia and Venezuela for basic food items. I am watching this space because the fake life Antiguans living will soon come to and end. Madison Ave life on mouby pocket.

  8. Trump invited the swing votes. He didnt invite Gonsalves from st vincent and skerritt from Dominica. Obviously not Gaston. So, he is not engaging any potential opposition. So, i guess he thinks jamaica, haiti, bahanas and st lucia are swing votes he can sway his way. Good luck Donald Duck.
