Antigua Among Caribbean Nations Hit by New U.S. Tariff Under Trump

Antigua and several Caribbean nations have been swept up in a new 10% universal tariff announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 2, 2025. The measure, which affects 21 countries across the region, is part of a broader global strategy targeting nearly 60 nations with tariffs ranging from 10% to 49%.

Framed as a move to combat “unfair global trade practices,” Trump said the tariffs are intended to protect American industries and revive U.S. manufacturing. The announcement, timed for what he dubbed “Liberation Day,” is widely seen as a political play to energize his protectionist base.

The policy threatens to strain U.S.-Caribbean relations, particularly for nations like Antigua, Jamaica, and Trinidad that rely heavily on exports to the U.S. Economists warn the tariffs could trigger reduced export earnings, job losses, and heightened poverty across the region.

While the U.S. has long used tariffs as a policy tool, the sweeping nature of Trump’s action marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions. Comparisons are being drawn to the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff, which deepened the Great Depression. Experts caution that this new wave of protectionism could bring higher consumer prices and global economic instability.

    • In Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs, 10 % is the default minimum for every country. 10% is not something specific for the Caribbeans. China : 67%, EU: 40%, etc.
If the Trump administration were to look a little bit closer, the tariff for Antigua would be way higher… Remind me what are the duty fees in Antigua for imported goods?

  1. The tariffs are on exports, not imports. Since most goods comes from China, indirectly the cost will tripping down to us.

  2. One question I see here above is, What does Antigua export to the USA.
Well we export our tourism to the USA. Therefore traveling to Antigua could be taxed if they follow this by the letter.
But the Duty that we place on import from the USA and other country was done in order to provide us with an income. Because we do not produce any of the goods we import. I therefore cannot see that the USA does something reciprocal.

  3. Antigua and Barbuda need now to improve it agriculture sector and re-introduce manufacturing. A country that depends on importation heavily to survive will fall badly.

  4. Well the Donald is following through on the promises that he made during his campaign. We can’t be upset about this because we are putting 10℅ on US imports and they are returning the favour. We can’t have it both ways.

  5. We are apart of caricom. Article 164 made serious taxations on many us goods
Comming into the region. Water , drinks. ,
Goods and paints @50 percent or something . That
Being said. They will apply a ton of pressure in the future when and if they dig into this. Maybe it’s a time for us to say. Drop the tax and don’t
Get smart about replacing with other taxes. That’s gonna be the same ting and suffering will occur

  6. I don’t understand why people have a problem with the taxes impose by the USA on import. It is their people that will have to pay for that in the end. And when we start buying goods from the USA and find them to be too expensive we will learn to shop elsewhere. So simple as that. Countries like China will have to find another way of sellingntheir products to us. That is if they find it to be feasible. All this will do is open other avenues. Perhaps more trade with South America or even Africa. Shipping lines will also perhaps look for Ports they can visit that will handle transshipment. Antigua and just built a new port and should be pushing the transshipment option and make Antigua a HOP for the eastern caribbean. Jamaica allready controls the Winward Islands. And they has a very large port and warehouse capabilities. Many car boats offload in Jamaica and Jamaica send the cars downstream. The only thing I fear is a tax on flights to the Caribbean. And Sandals and any other online company may want to rethink selling their product in the USA. All those adds on CNN will not be needed any longer.

  7. The reality is Antigua exports very little to the USA.
And the truth is we actually can find other more favorable sources for our inports such as Canada, South and Central America and other Caribbean countries.
It is inevitable that good China now sells to the Caribbean, that passes through US ports, will now be re-routed through other countries.
We can find creative ways to mitigate the impact of the tarrifs or even turn it into a net benefit.
