Tropical Storm Jerry Strengthens as It Nears the Leeward Islands
Tropical Storm Jerry is strengthening as it moves quickly toward the west-northwest and could bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the northern Leeward Islands later today into Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 a.m. advisory.

At 5 a.m. AST, Jerry was located near latitude 15.7°N and longitude 57.7°W, about 395 miles (640 km) east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 km/h) and is moving west-northwest at 20 mph (31 km/h). Gradual strengthening is expected over the next few days, and Jerry could become a hurricane by late Friday or Saturday.
A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for:
- Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Montserrat
- St. Barthelemy and St. Martin
- Sint Maarten, Saba, and St. Eustatius
- Guadeloupe and nearby islands
Forecasters say the center of Jerry is expected to pass near or to the northeast of the northern Leeward Islands later today and tonight.
Rainfall and Wind Impacts
Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated totals up to 6 inches, is expected across the Leeward and Virgin Islands through Friday, posing a risk of flash flooding in low-lying and steep areas.
Tropical-storm-force winds could extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km), mainly east of the storm’s center.
Marine Hazards
Swells generated by Jerry have already begun affecting the Leeward and Windward Islands and are forecast to spread toward the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight, creating life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
Residents in the northern Leeward Islands are urged to monitor official updates from their local meteorological offices and prepare for possible deteriorating conditions later today.
The next full advisory from the National Hurricane Center will be issued at 11 a.m. AST.
