Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in portions of the Lesser Antilles
beginning Friday, where a tropical storm warning is in effect.

Tropical storm and hurricane conditions are possible elsewhere in the Leeward Islands where hurricane and tropical storm watches are currently in effect.

Additional watches and warnings will likely be required tonight.

This rainfall may produce isolated flash and urban flooding, along with isolated mudslides in areas of higher terrain.

Hurricane Watches and Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued in the northern Leeward Islands Thursday as Tropical Storm Tammy heads its way.

The storm reached official tropical storm status Wednesday, and forecasts indicate the tropical storm could threaten the northern Leeward Islands with gusty winds and tropical downpours starting Friday and lasting into the weekend.

Tropical Storm Tammy is about 200 miles east of Barbados and 300 miles east-southeast of Martinique.

The cyclone is moving west-northwest at 13 mph and a slower west to west-northwest motion is expected to continue through Thursday night. A turn to the northwest is then forecast on Friday, and that motion should continue into the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are around 60 mph with higher gusts, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Tammy will gradually strengthen as it approaches the Leeward Islands.

  • St. Maarten/St. Martin

A tropical storm watch is issued when tropical storm-force winds (sustained winds of 39-73 mph) are possible within the watch area within 48 hours.

What is the forecast for Tropical Storm Tammy?

The NHC says Tammy is expected to continue a slower west to west-northwest motion through Thursday night before a gradual turn to the northwest on Friday and into the weekend.

On that track, the center of Tropical Storm Tammy will move near or over the Leeward Islands on Friday and Saturday. At that point, the NHC says Tammy is forecast to be at or near hurricane strength (maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or stronger).

The NHC says tropical storm conditions are expected within the Tropical Storm Warning area starting on Friday. In addition, hurricane conditions are possible in portions of the Leeward Islands on Friday night and Saturday. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the Tropical Storm Watch area starting Friday.

Heavy rain is also expected across the region while Tammy spins across the area.

Tammy is expected to produce storm total rainfall amounts of 3-6 inches, with maximum amounts of 10 inches, across portions of the northern Windward into the Leeward Islands.

Rainfall totals of 1-2 inches with higher amounts of up to 4 inches are expected in the British and U.S. Virgin Islands into eastern Puerto Rico.

Those rains may produce flash and urban flooding, along with isolated mudslides in the higher terrain.

WHEN IS THE TYPICAL LAST HURRICANE STRIKE ON THE US COAST

storm surge could also raise water levels by 1-3 feet above normal tide levels near where the center of Tropical Storm Tammy moves across the Leeward Islands.

After passing the northern Caribbean islands, Tammy is expected to be pulled northward by a frontal boundary but stay well clear of the Lower 48.

Atlantic hurricane season running slightly above average

With less than 20% of hurricane season left to go, the Atlantic hurricane season is already running slightly above average. There have been 20 tropical storms so far this season, with six of them becoming hurricanes. Three of those hurricanes reached major status.

On average, the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, sees 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) only has two names left on the 2023 Atlantic storm list after Tammy. If all the names on this year’s list are exhausted, the NHC will use a supplemental list of names.
