Three teams will grace the shores of Antigua and Barbuda from the UK in early July to engage in matches as well as enjoy the best of our tourism offerings.
The Merchant Taylor School Cricket team, The Army Medical Services Netball Team and the Nottingham Girls High School Netball team will converge on Antigua from the 3rd to the 13th of July 2023.
The Merchant Taylor cricket team (under 18) will be hosted at the Jolly Beach Resort and will be playing against the national combined schools cricket team as well as other school teams, while the AMS and Nottingham Girls netball teams will be staying at Jolly Beach Resort and St. James Club respectively, playing against local combined as well as schools and village league netball teams.
According to Sports Tourism Officer in the Ministry of Tourism Karen Joseph, the arrival of the teams during the same time frame may prove hectic but is welcomed in the aftermath of Covid which saw a sharp decline in Sports Tourism activities.
“We welcome these teams at a time when the Sports Tourism Unit is looking to undertake an intense marketing campaign at the later part of this year going into 2024 as a part of a drive to ramp up team visits in various disciplines,” states Ms. Joseph.
It is the hope of the head of the Sports Tourism Unit that working collaboratively with the Ministry of Sports along with village and school teams in the various sporting disciplines will see a renewed interest in consistent training as well as the upkeep of sporting facilities year-round.
The three teams combined will see over 60 persons travelling to Antigua and Barbuda.
While on island the teams will visit attractions such Stingray City, and Shirley’s Heights, and complete a catamaran circumnavigation tour among other water sport activities.
