Trevor Walker Criticizes PM Browne’s Photo with Masked Gang Members

Barbuda MP Trevor Walker has expressed strong disapproval of a recent photograph of Prime Minister Gaston Browne with masked gang members, stating that the image sends the wrong message to the public and undermines efforts to address gang violence in Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking in Parliament, Walker acknowledged that while meeting with gang members in an attempt to initiate dialogue might be a bold move, the optics of the situation were troubling. “You’re taking a chance, going out on a limb—that’s fine. We’ll see if you can swim,” Walker remarked. However, he emphasized that the decision to be photographed alongside masked individuals was problematic.

Walker argued that Prime Minister Browne should have insisted that the gang members remove their masks if they wanted to appear in the photo. “No Prime Minister of any country should be standing up as the leader of a nation with anybody in a mask,” he stated.

According to Walker, allowing such an image could create the impression that the Prime Minister is condoning or trivializing criminal behavior, which is precisely what the government should be working to eliminate.

The Barbuda MP stressed the importance of principles in leadership, noting that while it’s important to show the public that steps are being taken to engage with gangs, such actions should be carried out with caution. “There must be some principled position,” Walker said. “You’re not coming in my picture with a mask.”

In addition to his criticism of the photograph, Walker called for immediate involvement of experts and professionals from the social transformation sector and relevant government agencies. He argued that while the Prime Minister’s engagement with gang members was a starting point, it should have been followed by the involvement of technical specialists who are trained to handle such sensitive situations.

“Social transformation has experts, technical people who can deal with these situations in a particular way and move the process forward,” Walker said. He acknowledged that neither he nor the Prime Minister had the expertise to address gang-related issues at the same level as trained professionals, and called for a more structured approach moving forward.

Despite his concerns, Walker expressed support for the proposed amendments to the related bill, stating that he had “no problem whatsoever” backing it, provided that responsible actions are taken in the future to address the issue of gang violence in a more effective and comprehensive manner.

  5. @Hypocrisy you’re the pathetic idiot. Do you really think that the US is not already looking at arguably the most corrupt leader in the western hemisphere? Do you think the US has forgotten the Olderbretch scandal with the DAWG present in the area at the time?
You are so determined to defend this clown, it makes you what you are. A lowdown, dirty,semi-illiterate, cool-aid drinking Labourite.
This clown has brought Antigua and Barbuda into the doldrums and you continue to blindly defend. Wow! Imagine a Labourite calling people dirty and lub ugly. Hey,ALP invented ugly.

    • oh so now they are just “watching”??? I thought the FBI was ready like freddy to handcuff him on January 18, 2024???? GASP!!!???? u mean the fbi PUNK OUT???

Apparently dem boys prefer to use their resources on ACTUAL CORRUPTION…John Ashe already snitched on the UPP and the GREEDY, ASHY FOOT, KICKBACKS former Prime Minister. Dead men tell no tales, that’s why he said his piece before “they” took him out!

3 buses donated to help our school children mysteriously registered in 3 UPP names?? One turned into a mobile brothel eh? wow! #UPPcorruption!!!

  6. SERPENT, SHUGY and RICHARD LEWIS should be EXPELLED from the party. They Guys are causing the IMPLOSION / EXPLOSION of UPP. They cannot be trusted. Richard Lewis needs to come clean and explain the alleged negotiation in reference to the HIGH COMMISSIONER to Jamaica.

  7. @Weeping and Gnashing.. As if you care a hoot about UPP or anyone in it. Your job is to spread misinformation that you hope will lead to confusion and the mashing up of the UPP but that ship has already sailed. You can stop now.

  8. Walker is a clown and has no concept of leadership. All he knows is how to enrich himself at the expense of the not too bright people of Barbuda. As the PM said these gangs are as large as a thousand members spanning all the villages of Antigua. There had to be communication to find a way to deal with this problem PM Browne has got vision, heart and guts and must be complimented for this initiative.
