Trailblazing Women Lead the Conversation at “Picture Her Power” Brunch
On August 24th, 2024, over 25 influential women leaders and emerging voices came together at the prestigious Black Sails, Hodges Bay Resort & Spa, for Picture Her Power: A Brunch with Trailblazing Women.
Hosted by The Directorate of Gender Affairs with sponsorship from ACB Caribbean, the event provided a platform for participants to engage in meaningful conversations about the challenges and opportunities facing women in leadership today, as well as discuss the importance of female representation in the political arena and media representation
Through interactive activities like the “Carousel Conversations,” attendees shared insights, strategies, and personal experiences, contributing to a rich dialogue on how to further empower women in these critical sectors.
“Picture Her Power was not just about networking—it was about igniting change,” said Mrs. T’Chell Antonio, Programme Officer at The Directorate of Gender Affairs. “We hope that the energy and ideas shared here today will have a lasting impact as we continue to work towards greater representation and equity for women.”
The event concluded with a brunch, where participants continued their conversations in a more informal setting, further strengthening the sense of community and shared purpose.

@Blonde wig – if you’re jealous you didn’t get an invitation, just say that.
Both men and women should contribute to decisions. Women should definitely be represented in all decision-making bodies, boards etc. in businesses, homes, various organisations, the government etc. I have some concerns, however, with the way in which women fight for equality/equity. First, in the past, too often women tried to be just like men. Women should accept the biological reality that we are different. In the workplace men bosses are often more understanding if a woman needs to take some time occasionally to tend to something concerning her children whereas female bosses will punish female workers for such because they think women should be just like men at work. Women bosses of all people should be trying to reform workplace policies to be fair to the biological realities of womanhood. Women in leadership should also help to give children a voice since women have unique knowledge of some of the needs of children that men often overlook in designing infrastructure, systems etc. Secondly, women leaders sometimes spend too much time and resources on social activities such as dinners at expensive hotels while leaving infrastructure such as buildings and equipment and other systems to fall apart. Male bosses pay more attention to infrastructure needs. Perhaps the men could do a bit better on the social front. Have some activities, but don’t make them too expensive to take away from more critical budget items. This is why both men and women need to be heard in decision-making. A leadership team of only women is just as bad as a leadership team of only men. There is often a lack of balance in obtaining what is needed by workers, society etc. Finally, I have found women bosses to be too cliquish. They are quick to divide workers into the in crowd (their friends) and the outcasts. If a person is not in the in-crowd, their ideas and opinions, no matter how correct, are denigrated and disrespected, their requests for resources are ignored etc. etc. etc. whereas every trivial thing that one of the friends in the in-crowd wants gets funded. They even manufacture obstacles to place in the path of people they don’t like. This decreases the productivity and success of the overall operation because many women bosses are too busy trying to score points against other women that they hate or are jealous of for whatever reason instead of paying attention to the tasks at hand and the goals or mission of the organization. They forget that their actions affect people’s lives. With power comes serious responsibility. Men don’t generally operate like that. Once you do your job, even if you’re not their friend, they listen to your requests respectfully, they are not running around spreading lies and rumours, trying to put obstacles in your way for no reason etc. etc. So, personally, I think that although both men and women should be a part of all decision-making bodies, I think men naturally make better, less emotional, leaders. However, good, knowledge men are not always available to fill those roles. So, of course, women can be leaders as well. However, I hope that women leaders will take a closer look at their weaknesses, not only their successes, and try to fix them so that people who work and live under them are not unduly affected.
@With power comes responsibility – I read your comments with great interest. You know, one of the general situation that is seen all around the world, more with women of all ages, ethnicity, levels, background, etc. is a tendency of no-firsts opportunity, criticism, pulling down or degrading, second guesses, and many others; should I say attributes; are the first reaction where women are concern. They have to prove themselves, they have to put-on a big fight to be and stay where they truly belong within their environment and almost always that big fight is a silent one or just demonstrating with actions and results their value and who they are from a human standpoint; it’s a generational conditioning. On the other hand, there is just a way where people accept or not the intelligence, the excellent or good work, actions, willingness, commitment, contribution, professionalism and dedication of other people, especially women. Sadly this is seen a lot in women towards other women. All this in a general states of affair, meaning in politics, education, private sector and even in the non-paid volunteer arena. Women all over the world have come a long way putting aside many stigmas. Empowering is the necessary word and action to be used and introduced especially to the younger generation, for this to become the norm and not the exception. So we think that when the ‘slogan’ Picture your Power is attached to a great initiative from the Directorate of Gender Affairs, to get women together with a clear and strong intention, is a great starting point and a response for filling necessary gaps, contributing, involving and advancing the role of women in our society, including teenagers and youths. Behind The Picture Your Power theme, name or slogan, there are solid plans to be built, work, commitments and actions to unfold, with the underline ‘benefit’ to our nation’s women and your help and support are needed to achieve them. When You Are Empowered, Your Responsibilities Come Easier, Faster and More Effective. Women are borne empowered, only that they do not know or recognize it!! Have a great Tuesday you all !☮️💟
Someone wrote in this tread : Women can be leaders as well….. As well?? No, no that’s a big mix-up. Women are leaders, best proven leaders!!! Women were borne leaders even if they don’t recognize it. Let’s ask our mothers…. It id shown right there. Young and old. Women/Mothers are leaders: leaders birthing a child out of a relationship; leaders nourishing and bringing up a child out of motherhood; leaders by keeping and nourishing a family out of cooking washing, ironing, cleaning, being a doctor, a nurse, a teacher, an assistant teacher, an advocate, a companion, a bread earner – all of this just in her own home/house big or small; isn’t all this the true meaning of leadership? And from that space of power, women can become anything in any place… but it is just a matter of circumstances, choices and conditions such as; opportunities, encouragement, support, wealth, ambition, outlook, desires and the likes that keep them from not thriving to be greater leaders. Never underestimate the power within a woman, all women, any woman. We all have mothers so that is why we use a Mother herein. In today’s world and in the Now, look at was is taking place: women are breaking their self-barriers and all other long time barriers and becoming and achieving what they deserve ! Recognition. President of Nations. Forceful Candidates. Best ‘elected’ Contenders in all areas where fairness is respected, and so forth, there are endless examples. So… empowering and supporting women, starting with the youngest and lead by the experienced-willing ones; the moment is right to go into this direction, the sooner the better, with the exclusion of turning it into a rat-race, competition and bringing down each other but developing the strongest front ever in order to reach the ideals, goals and purposes that are there for the taking…. in benefit of our communities and nation! This is not to be taken as a ‘Women Movement’ it is empowering women to contribute and build a great nation, because women can do it – they’re are actually going with the saying: behind each successful man is a great woman. Now, the saying should be: alongside a successful man is a great woman… and why not: behind or (even) beside a great and successful woman is a great and successful man? That, that could also become: “A great and successful woman leading the way to a great today and tomorrow for all” (with everyone alongside supporting her)! 🙌👏🏼☮️☮️
