A Canadian tourist is grappling with unimaginable grief as he copes with the loss of his wife and young son in a tragic incident at Devil’s Bridge, Antigua. The incident marks the second tourist death at the site this year.

The family, on a holiday in Antigua, had set out to Devil’s Bridge with the intention of creating cherished memories, particularly by witnessing the sunrise.

However, what was meant to be a joyous experience turned into a nightmare.

Reports indicate that the young boy slipped, prompting an instinctive reach for his mother.

The unfortunate sequence of events led both mother and son to end up in turbulent waters. In a heroic attempt to rescue them, the father dove into the water but, tragically, became the one in need of rescue himself.

Emergency measures were taken as CPR was administered to the father. Despite these efforts, the heartbreaking outcome was the retrieval of the lifeless bodies of the 5-year-old boy and his mother.

A doctor pronounced them dead at approximately 9:15 am.

This devastating incident has prompted grief counseling for the surviving father, who now faces the daunting challenge of coping with the sudden loss of his loved ones.

The Antiguan authorities, including Tourism Minister Hon. Charles Fernandez, expressed condolences to the grieving family.

Minister Fernandez assured the public that efforts are underway to enhance safety measures at Devil’s Bridge.

The Ministry of Tourism is actively exploring measures, such as potential regulations limiting visits during specific hours, to ensure the safety of visitors to this popular site.

This tragic occurrence underscores the need for heightened safety awareness at tourist attractions, urging both visitors and authorities to prioritize measures that can prevent such heart-wrenching incidents in the future.

    • We do not yet know the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, therefore, let us not rush to judgement.
Be at least empathetic to the remaining family members.
I send condolences for the loss of young lives and hope that the father regains his health.
If there is something in the mortar beside the pestle then the truth would hopefully come out in the long run. In the meantime let us be empathetic and respectful.

      • @ Joan Salmon: I agree with you, let us not rush into judgement with the incident however, I can assure you that I can rush into judgement with our officials of not being proactive but they tend to be too reactive…… Now after the fact minister Fernandez assured the public that efforts are underway to enhance safety measures at Devil’s Bridge. Why now? Shouldn’t this be done long time ago.

    • How did you type this, still decided to publish this response, and think it was appropriate?? My grandma always used to say, when people think of the nastiest ideas of someone, it’s because they themselves would do it. The report clearly states that the father jumped in an attempt to save. The man is probably fragile at the moment.

      • Hope,

  2. This is really sad and regrettable. No doubt law enforcement officials here and in Canada will examine every aspect of this in order to verify that it was nothing more than a tragic accident. I know I speak for all my country men and women when I say that we all grieve this unfortunate loss.

  3. Wow really sad for the deceased.Rip. so young. Was probably having the time of their lives in paradise not knowing what’s to come. Glad one of them remains to tell the tale.

  4. @sadiel …,if your parental unit never saw it fit for you to learn dialect, that’s your loss. I embrace it with pride as a born Antiguan ! A yah me bawn

    • Lol…I know Sadiel and you can’t even type GM to her you have to spell out Good Morning… she’s a weirdo

  5. So…..you mean to tell me, we all have to wait for more people to dead in order for safety measures to be implemented….hmmm….seems like the minister of tourism lacks an active brain, lost his interest in his work and just don’t give a f**k or he had a peanut shell for a brain or the persons involved pocket the money to do it and now is sad.

Condolences to the family of the deceased, prayers with you all.

  6. Very sad, may the boy and his mother rest in peace, and the father find the strength to cope today, and the days after.🙏

  7. Going forward they should require that visitors HAVE to wear life vests/flotation devices when visiting the area. They could either rent these at minimal cost, or allow visitors to bring their own, but no life vest/no entry, should be the new policy.

  9. This is sad indeed, but also fishy. What were they doing up at Devil’s Bridge so early in the morning? As far as safety measures go, the name of the place is Devil’s Bridge for God’s sake. Why would you go to a place like that and play around especially with a child. The only thing I would recommend the government do is employ security to ensure that people use their brains.

  10. I agree, maybe there is a big insurance on the woman’s name. I do think a careful inquest should be done in a case like that. Death in paradise ain’t easy on our little islands

    • @Insunuator you have an apt psudonym. Clearly you on purpose missed the word enhance. Clearly after such a situation persons will always mull whether there is something more that can be done. Please note that even in so called developed countries, Niagara falls, tends to have 20 or 30 deats each year.

  11. But…. Clearly the child was right on the EDGE bcos I’ve walked on the flat part numerous times I NEVER WENT TO THE EDGE bcos one can easily slip since it’s very slippery there ….. so y go so close ….

So y would she allowed the child to be so close to the edge

Now both are dead at Xmas time this has to be the worst thing
Condolences to husband and immediate family

  12. My sincere condolences to the husband and extended family of the deceased.
This is a rather sad and unfortunate occurrence within our shores.

Also unfortunate, as is seemingly the trend right now, those in authority will be damned if they do or say, and damned if they don’t!

TBH, what else did we really expect the Minister to say at this point? There is nothing else he could have done but sympathised with the widower, commit to assisting in whatever way we can, and commit to ensuring that safety measures are put in place. That’s it! That is ALL that could have been said at the time!

The same thing happened with that huge pond on road to Sea View Farm, in the vicinity of former BBC Relay Station… For decades it was a dangerous place, drowning incidents, vehicular accidents, etc., occurred several times, it was a treacherous waterway, and dangerous to traverse the roadway following heavy rains. But officials ONLY FELT THE NEED TO ERECT SAFETY BARRIERS AFTER A TRAGIC/FATAL INCIDENT INVOLVING THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF ONE PROMINENT AND POLITICALLY CONNECTED PERSON; WHERE HER CAR ENDED UP IN THE DEPTHS OF THAT POND ONE NIGHT!
Different administration, same reactionary response! Seldom are we (referring to the government here – because we are) proactive in our approach to issues!

What I truly hope happens as a result of this incident are:

    1. DO QUICKLY implement safety mechanisms/measures – because there is none in place right now, EXCEPT WHERE PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO EXERCISE COMMON SENSE AND DUE REGARD FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND WELL-BEING.

    2. Carefully think through these measures, and make the requisite changes to make adherence enforceable.

    3. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! Law Enforcement Officials (LEOs) locally in Antigua 🇦🇬 and in the visitors’ home Country and Provinces 🍁 – DO YOUR INVESTIGATIONS THOROUGHLY!

You’d be surprised (hopefully NOT) to find that our track record in Antigua and Barbuda for BEING UNABLE TO SOLVE CRIME is actually VERY WELL KNOWN in the developed world! They know that our officials are not above reproach, but are in fact quite corruptible and many tend to be of the view that “they could come for a vacation, commit the perfect crime and get clean away with it”! Because our detecting capabilities are weak at best, and a few well-placed dollars (especially foreign kinds), can create some nice grease!
    PROVE THEM WRONG!
Make sure that at the end of the day, THIS IS REALLY JUST A TRAGIC ACCIDENT!

Because ultimately, it will be Antigua and Barbuda 🇦🇬 that will suffer from the fall-out, if, as another commentator puts it, “it turns out to be more in the mortar than the pestle”, and we dropped the ball.

If ever there was a time for, “TRUST, BUT VERIFY”, this is it!

  13. I am in my late 30s and since I was a teenager I been wondering why Devil’s bridge doesn’t have some kinda safety barrier…Really feeling it….As a Father I could not imagine living without my children…I dunno if I am that strong…My heart is with him and the family members…Condolences 💐🙏🏾🕊️

  14. This is not the first time a tourist has died here under the same circumstances. Would it be that hard to act like you care and take some damn safety measures? I fully intend to NEVER visit Antigua and Barbuda.
My heart breaks for Shray, Mohini and Satwik
