The authorities in St Kitts and Nevis are expected to solicit the assistance of British Airways and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda after a passenger onboard of one of its flight to St Kitts via the V C Bird International Airport has been confirmed as the federation’s latest COVID-19 case.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Sen the Hon Wendy Phipps on Monday confirmed that a 51-year old female passenger, a citizen of St Kitts and Nevis and a resident on Nevis, has tested positive for the coronavirus.
Phipps disclosed that the passenger has a travel history from the United Kingdom on March 14.
British Airways Flight BA2157 travels from London-Gatwick to V C Bird International Airport in Antigua and then on to St Kitts’ Robert L Bradshaw International Airport on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
It has been confirmed that that flight operated on March 14 and on arrival several passengers were placed under self quarantine.
The patient has been placed in compulsory isolation in order to limit the likelihood of transmission to others and the Ministry of Health on Nevis has already begun tracing passengers who were in contact with her and disembarked in Nevis or St Kitts , These contacts would be subject to strict quarantine and testing.
Although 14 days have passed contact tracing is still expected to extend to the crew members of British Airways who operated that flight as well as passengers who sat in close proximity and disembarked either in St Kitts or Antigua.
The latest case is the federation’s ninth COVID-19.
On March 25, 2020, government reported two (2) COVID-19 cases: A 21-year-old male and a 57-year-old female woman who arrived in the Federation from New York, USA. on March 18, 2020 and were tested on March 20.
On March 29, 2020 – Five (5) COVID-19 cases were reported – three females – 10 months, 24 years and 36 years and two males – 29 years and 39 years,” arrived from St Maarten and Antigua during the period March 6th to 13th, 2020.
