SOURCE: NY POST- Three dozen people were rescued after a tourist boat capsized at an underground Erie Canal attraction in Lockport, New York Monday morning.
All of the passengers have been accounted for after the boat went under in shallow water, although some had to swim under the vessel to get to safety, according to WBEN News Radio.
Some of the victims were taken to a local hospital while others left the scene in their own vehicles or waited for tour buses, according to the report.
“Lockport police and fire departments, as well as several other agencies are working to assist parties that were on a boat that capsized in the Lockport Cave Tours,” said a statement from Lockport police released at 11:25 a.m.
“Crews are working to assist all parties safely out of the area. The incident is still ongoing,” the statement read.
It’s unclear what caused the vessel to capsize.
Lockport police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.
The Lockport Caves is a tourist destination that features underground boat rides along the Eric Canal’s Niagara Escarpment ridge, about 30 miles northeast of Buffalo, according to its website.
The water in the cave itself is roughly 4 to 6 feet deep, WIVB-TV reported.
A local school group was next in line to take the boat tour before the accident, a WBEN correspondent said.
