**International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade: Secretary-General’s Message**

On 25 March 2024, the world commemorates the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, reflecting on the profound impact of this dark chapter in human history.

For centuries, enslaved Africans endured unimaginable suffering, battling for their freedom against oppressive colonial powers. The Transatlantic Slave Trade, spanning four hundred years, saw millions of Africans trafficked and enslaved, subjected to horrific crimes including rape, floggings, lynchings, and other brutalities.

In his address, the Secretary-General highlighted the terror that defined the lives of the enslaved, contrasted against the immense wealth amassed by those who orchestrated this inhumane trade. The legacy of this period continues to reverberate through modern societies, perpetuating systems of discrimination and white supremacy.

The commemorative meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for 10 a.m. New York time, features Prof. Sir Hilary Beckles delivering the keynote address on the theme “Creating Global Freedom: Countering Racism with Justice in Societies and Among Nations.” This theme underscores the ongoing struggle for equal rights and freedoms faced by descendants of enslaved Africans and people of African descent worldwide.

The Secretary-General’s message calls for reparatory justice frameworks to address generations of exclusion and discrimination, advocating for healing, repair, and justice as essential components of reconciliation. The ultimate goal is to build a world free from racism, discrimination, bigotry, and hate, fostering human rights, dignity, and opportunities for all.

As the world remembers the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, this day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to unite in the pursuit of a more just and equitable global society.

  1. Antigua Airways was the most recent slave ship or craft to bring slaves from Africa to the West across the Atlantic.
The Nation should be holding a VIGIL at Fort James to honor the recent African Slaves transported to Antigua some of whom drowned at sea trying to escape to greener pastures.
