RETRACTION STATEMENT

Times Caribbean wishes to issue a retraction regarding the article published on March 12th, 2025, titled “MILLIONS MISSING? ANTIGUA’S PRIME MINISTER FACES HEAT OVER MEGAYACHT SALE MYSTERY.” The article, which was based on information provided by the Associated Press, inaccurately represented details surrounding the ongoing court case related to the sale of the Alfa Nero yacht.

The content of the original article was extracted from an Associated Press report written by Dánica Coto, which discussed a lawsuit filed in a United States Federal Court in Puerto Rico. The information presented in that report, which was relied upon for our article, was quoted directly from the Associated Press article. However, we acknowledge that some details within the article may have been misinterpreted or not fully clarified, and we deeply regret any confusion caused by the publication.

We apologize for any harm or misrepresentation this may have caused and want to emphasize that our intention was to accurately reflect the news as presented by the Associated Press. We have now updated our coverage to ensure it aligns more closely with the verified details of the case.

We appreciate the ongoing efforts of all parties involved in providing transparency, and we remain committed to delivering accurate and fair reporting moving forward.

Sincerely,
The Editorial Team
Times Caribbean

  1. So The Times Caribbean put their spin on the AP article. Rather than reporting out what the Associated Press issued they may have crossed the line.
Let’s not muddy the water before this plays out. Soon we I’ll hear the PM and his family are innocent victims.

One would think this piece of litigation has been around for awhile given entities such as West Indies Oil and PDV Caribe are participating in some aspect of the transaction.
How did they think when the litigation is in Court in PR that m the details will not come out?

I’m suspicious the lawyers choose PR as the venue, so that it will be covered in the Caribbean Press.

Did the Government of Antigua and Barbuda know that the sanction was removed from the Ownership of the craft, before they concluded the sale?

BTW: The environmental damage excuse for selling the boat is not going to fly.

  2. In all fairness to Times Caribbean, the story was widely carried by the Associated Press and many other publications. The Honourable Prime Minister should not just seek a retraction from Times Caribbean but from the original source of the article which has a far wider reaching and coverage than the Times Caribbean.

  3. Sorry but damage done already and those Gaston haters love it like that. Still believe Times Caribbean should pay a monetary fine for this slander and next St. Kitts Time to follow.

  4. Pebbles indeed. Y attack the small media unless they added things that AP did not say. Y am I not hearing those involve going after the AP? What, too big for them or the truth was indeed revealed!!!

  5. @Audrey Phillips
The Prime Minister interestingly has not questioned the contents of the AP article. Why?
For there is nothing defamatory in the Associated Press article. They reported on the Court’s proceedings.
AP is carried in the UK and EU press globally for that matter. The UK has favorable defamation laws.
The Minister could have had his UK representative get a UK lawyer and threaten to sue.

This is just PR plausible denial on behalf of the PM and his team.

A $450 million boat if you include the art work was sold for $40 million.

Right now the focus is on the money of only the $40 Million.

The bigger issue is:if one is to believe the AP article; the boat owner’s sanctions were remove by the US.

The Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador in DC was communicating with the US State Department and would have know that the known super yacht owner was off the scansions list before the sale.

If you think about it. This is a failure of the local and regional press who should have reported that the sanctions were lifted.
Recalled Schmidt walked away from his winning bid?
It’s shown that the partner involved from the law firm where the case is being heard in PR, is willing to talk.

Let’s see which local or regional media can get a deeper scoop about this case.
