Three MPs Call for the Resignation of Antigua’s Attorney General Steadroy ‘Cutie’ Benjamin

Independent Member of Parliament Asot Michael, Barbuda MP Trevor Walker and Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle have called for the resignation of Antigua and Barbuda’s Attorney General Steadroy Cuite Benjamin.

They told parliament yesterday that the only honourable thing for Benjamin to do is resign after presiding over the creation of a particular piece of law which they argue has turned the criminal justice system in Antigua and Barbuda upside down.

Here is a video clip of the three MP’s calling on Benjamin to resign with immediate effect.

They were at the time debating the Criminal Prosecution Service Amendment Bill 2023 which seeks to retroactively validate the actions of police officers to charge persons without first obtaining the permission of the Director of Public Prosecution.

The amendment was in response to a High Court ruling in April which stated that a charge against the accused person was unlawful since the police did not obtain the permission of the DPP to prefer the charge.

Since that case, serious doubt has been cast over the ability of the police to charge persons and even more doubt raised over the validity of convictions from 2017 to present.

  2. BANKRUPT Franz DeFreitas failed to use his BULLbud
G-R-E-A-T-F-U-L that the yankee is out of Parliament

WOOTUP!!!! Franz collapse at the counting station. Family already flown in for some kinda imaginary swearing-in ceremony that only take place in BANKRUPT BULLbud head 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

  3. A set of corrupt ALP politicians are seated in the parliament of A&B. Imagine, trying to pass a bill that will retroactively undo another bill that was passed in order to prevent Cutie from facing any legal/criminal charges for his offence.
All Antiguans should be offended, no matter what party you’re affiliated with. Any other ordinary
citizen would have had to face the consequences for such an offence.

Why are we silent and willingly accepts LESS from the leaders who should be setting the best examples and holding themselves to the highest standards? Why?
What has happened to our collective sense of right and wrong? And we talk about the youths while showing them that we will accept anything.

I’m not a lawyer but, when this new bill is pass then there should be some way for Cutie to be retroactively charged for the offence he got away with because of the passage of that first bill.

Shame on all of us Antiguans for continuing to allow such self serving, dishonorable, dishonest individuals to represent us and our country.

  4. The GOVERNMENT receiving 3 gifts in the form of buses from Korea to boost the school bus fleet. Three “morally upright” UPP politicians did the “not corrupt” thing and register the buses in their PERSONAL NAMES. Ohhh John Ashe is a pity you gone

10 trucks listed on 1 invoice to pick up 1 dead dog….as revealed in Parliament. And your CAMPAIGN MANAGER in charge of that department? oh parliament tells it all

The “morally upright” party not fooling a soul

  5. “for the UPP to state it never knowingly accepted the donations as the proceeds of any crime, is tantamount to an acknowledgement of what is known as wilful blindness in anti-money laundering theory and practice. The UPP leadership including Baldwin Spencer had an obligation to ascertain from Dr John Ashe, the ultimate source of funding for the monies being donated as such monies would have been clearly over and above the income level of Dr John Ashe.”

    BRIBERY SCANDAL
    KICKBACKS
    UPP “morally upright”

  6. Baldwin Spencer, a former Prime Minister of Antigua & Barbuda, has been cited as having received portions of the bribes paid to ex-diplomat Dr. John Ashe, who is embroiled in a recently announced UN bribery scandal.

Spencer is reported to have received two separate payments of US$170,000 and US$100,000, from Dr Ashe.

There have been mixed reaction to Spencer’s alleged involvement with Dr. Ashe, including CALLS FOR HIM TO RESIGN or be removed as Leader of the Opposition in the parliament of Antigua and Barbuda.

    • According to you, since Baldwin Spencer was corrupt, and took bribe money, then the citizens of Antigua should accept corruption from the ALP leaders. Fine. But we should also leave young people alone when they do wrong things. Let us accept corruption from everyone. Do not set any standards for anyone, simple.

      • JOHN ASH a dem match! UPP feel them slick. JOHN ASH sang like a canary. ASH exposed the nasty stench of CORRUPTION characteristic of the UPP they tried to hide and overlook.

        time to clean it up
        Richard Lewis

    • Have you ever wondered why Casroy James is still in the USA? If you don’t know, ask the PM. If you know how the US government function, then you must know that Odebretch is never going away. I am convinced that your boss is going to get a ride on a US military aircraft.

  7. You Labourites! Always trying to defend the age long corruption of any ALP government, by pointing fingers at UPP. My God! Are we so blinded by party that we are incapable of rational thought? Cutie Benjamin belongs in jail, no question about it. America has not forgotten the deaths of its citizens because of this man, yet Antigua appointed him AG. His incompetence has thrown the judiciary into confusion and resignation is almost too honorable for Cutie.
Let’s stick to the matter at hand and stop the blaming UPP thing. ALP is the government, not UPP. Unfortunately.

  8. To the UPP Parlimentarians: I must say, I’m very disappointed that y’all remained quiet on the Asot Michael ejection/suspension motion today. I know y’all don’t think you should support Asot but, y’all should be STANDING for IMPARTIALITY in the so called “honourable house” where a bunch of dishonourable people sits.
Unfortunately, y’all looked like the selfish Reds. I’m not looking for a colour change in government with no difference in the leaders characters. Antiguans deserves better. I said what I said.

  9. Amazing how so many Antiguans are willing to defend Cutie and. It becomes more and more clear why Barbuda never wanted to be almagamated with us.

    • Antigua is a lawless state where politicians can get away with stealing the country’s assets and making laws to protect their criminal activities. And an AG who doesn’t even know he cannot retrospectively impose a bill.
And the labour supporters on this page are a bunch of fools and hypocrites who pretend not to know the difference between sense and ignorance. Could these things happen in a real democracy? NO.

  10. @Not a good look. I am in full agreement. I am not a supporter of Asot, I am UPP supporter. However, I love Antigua irrespective of the party of the day.
The show down in Parliament today was utterly disgraceful.

The Speaker supposed to be impartial, but his conduct with overseeing events today suggested otherwise. He abused his position, he was pugnacious, he overlooked Gaston’s behaviour who was the catalyst causing Asot to respond in the manner that he did.

Whilst UPP members may have objectionable issues against Asot they should have put those issues aside and voted against Asot’s suspension.

The Speaker should not be allowed to do what he did and get away with it. Asot was right to point out the incompetency of the Speaker and he was right to represent his consistency by pointing out Cutie Benjamin’s woeful incompetency.

Asot should staged objections to his suspension by gathering outside the boundaries of Parliament with his constituents during the period of his expolson and voice his concerns with his supporters.

The Speake and ALP need to be reminded that Antigua is a democratic country and not a totallerterian regime headed by Gaston Browne. God help Antigua if we should ever become a Republican state headed by Gaston or the ALP.

If we should ever become a Republican, state, Gaston and the ALP will reduce Antigua below the level of Papa Doc’s former regime. Let’s not forget that it was Lester Bird’s intentions to turn Antigua into a police state and left to Gaston we are heading in that direction.
UPP members, you are required to stand up for the best interests of Antigua and Barbuda and voting with ALP for the removal Asot was not our interests. Bad decision!

    • LMAO!!!!! So suddenly Asot Michael is a saint now!!! UPP must stand with him because its just to oppose ABLP and Gerry Watts!!! Oh so we forgetting the CARIBARENA TAPES AND ASOT LONG HISTORY OF THEFING AND RAPPING OF THE TREASURY!!!! As long as we oppose ABLP we going to pretend that the same UPP vowed to put the same ASOT MICHAEL in jail for plundering the treasury. HYPOCRITE MUCH?

      • When will the Gaston Browne administration push for the illegal printing of Antigua and Barbuda passports case to be called 🇦🇬 When will the Gaston Browne administration push for the illegal printing of Antigua and Barbuda passports case to be called 🇦🇬

Black hypocrisy, nobody has to vow to put these guys in jail.
They, Gaston, Cutie and Asot are doing an excellent job imprisoning each other.

  11. @Lawless Government Officials, state your name. Start a movement, I’ll join.
The reason nothing changes is because people don’t have the money to go after these crooks that run our country. ABLP don’t care. Everyday Antiguans who love this country don’t have the money to pursue them.
We all know they have each other’s backs. You, a lawyer should take this on. We will help and support you. The rich people of Antigua, and there a many, could careless what the government does until it effects them.
Shame on you for calling out Antiguans for not doing anything. Maybe we’ve been trying an getting nowhere. Look at how our UPP MP’s are being treated. The ALP bullies in Parliament are a disgrace. They lied an cheated to get re-elected.
    DO SOMETHING AND STOP TALKING.

    • @Don’t give a damn government: Where in my comment stated that I’m a lawyer? You missed the word NOT. Shame on me for calling out Antiguans, you say – should I be calling out Barbudans instead?
Isn’t this platform an outlet for airing ones opinion? I’m going to suggest that you take your own advise and do something — stop waiting one others to take the lead. 3 months per year is the time I spend in Antigua.

Let me clarify that my comment was to address corruption of government officials — not a declaration of political affiliation. I will call out what is offensive to me in ANY government, even the one that received my support. I have an expectation that government leaders are morally obligated to do the right thing — and when they don’t, the people who put them in office has a duty to take them to task, and or call for their ouster. So, I will NOT be quiet!
