One thousand meals were served by the National School Meals Programme as of Tuesday 26th May, 2020.

By the end of Wednesday, another 1,200 servings will be transported to secondary school students, teachers and ancillary staff.

Education officials agreed for the NSMP to provide sustenance to those who returned to the classroom to make final preparations for CSEC examinations, considering vendors are not permitted around schools and canteens remain closed.

Manager of the NSMP, Ezra Knowles is reporting that for the most part, Monday’s distribution was a smooth process.

“For the 14 plus years in operation, this is the first time we would have catered to secondary schools. It is not business as usual, we are dealing with the Coronavirus and so we were tasked with the responsibility of providing meals for the secondary fifth formers, who returned to school last Wednesday.

“For the next five weeks, we will be providing them with a meal and we have tried to do a very interesting and exciting menu,” Knowles said.

While the number of vegetarians was not available in time for Monday, that matter was resolved in quick succession.

Knowles stated the NSMP is pleased to be assisting in such an endeavour and expressed appreciation to the Board of Education for assisting in meeting the needs of the students.

Going forward, meal distribution is expected to reach 1,300 daily.
