PM Browne: Government Will Support Hospitality Workers with New Union Initiative
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has reiterated his support for the establishment of a hospitality-specific workers’ union, calling on hotel employees to take greater control of their representation.
Speaking on his weekly radio programme, Mr Browne criticised the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), accusing it of failing to secure adequate benefits for hotel workers. He argued that a dedicated union for the hospitality sector would better serve employees in one of the country’s most vital industries.
“This is about empowering the workers,” he said. “For too long, they have been shortchanged. A hospitality-specific union would give them direct control over their affairs and ensure they are properly represented.”
The Prime Minister accused the ABWU of mismanaging union dues and prioritising political interests over the needs of its members. He also suggested that hotel workers have been left behind in negotiations, particularly concerning service charges and wage increases.
“There are thousands of hotel workers contributing to the union, yet they have little to show for it,” Mr Browne said. “They need a union that will truly fight for their rights and financial well-being.”
The proposed hospitality union could offer several advantages, including:
- Housing Initiatives – Mr Browne suggested that a well-managed union could develop affordable housing projects specifically for hotel workers.
- Improved Financial Security – A dedicated union, he argued, could establish credit union services to help members access loans and mortgages more easily.
- Stronger Bargaining Power – With a focused membership, the union would be able to negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Mr Browne assured workers that his administration would facilitate the legal framework for the establishment of the new union but emphasised that it must be worker-led and independent of government influence.

“This is not a Labour Party initiative. It is about giving hotel workers the power to shape their own future,” he said.
The government is expected to outline further details in the coming weeks as discussions on the initiative progress.

I see nothing wrong with this initiative as we currently have the Teacher’s Union, out of which Community First Credit Union was born. The Police has it’s own Union and have their own credit union so too are government workers.
Empower yourself and stop being slaves to that waste Union.
Supporting hospitality workers with a stronger union is a commendable move, as they are often underpaid and overworked despite their contributions to the tourism industry. However, the government must ensure that this initiative doesn’t become just another bureaucratic project with little real impact. What specific policies and protections will be put in place? Workers need real solutions, not just promises.
The success of this initiative will depend on whether the union remains independent and truly advocates for workers rather than becoming politically influenced. Transparency and worker involvement will be key.
“This is not a Labour Party initiative” – Who believes that show ur hand!!
I’m sure how much people will agree with the government trying to encourage hotels workers to form their own union,is those same workers will have to go back to the government if nothing doesn’t work out, what the government should do,is to outline to all the Unions what needs to be done,if they think that Unions are not doing their Jobs well…
PM Browne is just trying his utmost best to destroy the ABWU it’s as simple as that who doesn’t believe that is very naive, he is cruel, wicked and vindictive, be careful God nar sleep
