The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) confirmed today, reports that the solar street lights received as a gift from the Chinese government are being stolen.

APUA could not say how many of those lights were subject to theft but promised to release a statement on the matter later in the day.

A resident reported seeing evidence of the theft yesterday on the southern side of the Botanic Gardens.

“It seems that thieves are climbing the new solar lights that the government put up and stealing the battery pack. I saw three of them open and the wires ripped off.

“Last time I passed it was two and today its three, all the wires reaped out,” the man said.

The battery for each street light is fixed, up on the poles in lockable compartments, meant to discourage theft, since they are very expensive.

The matter has reached the attention of the police.

Installation of 2000 solar street lights began late last year and the project in ongoing.
