On Friday, July 23, 2021, The University of the West Indies Open Campus (UWIOC) Antigua and Barbuda held a distinguished achievement ceremony commemorating a historic accomplishment of the institution’s operations. The ceremony was held to celebrate 69 students who represented the first cohort to complete community based training in professional development courses at the Rural South Community Development Center (RSCDC) and the first cohort of students to complete vocational certification in Barbering, Cosmetology (Beauty Therapy), and Nail technology.

On this Occasion, the Head of Site, Ms. Coleen Letlow indicated that the collaboration with the Member of Parliament of St. John’s Rural South, the Hon Daryll Matthew, to offer courses at the community development center meant that The UWIOC was fulfilling its strategic imperative of providing educational and training access to all. “If people cannot not get to us because of prevailing circumstances, we are willing to go to them.” Letlow said. Letlow thanked the Honorable Minister for ensuring that the community development center was serving its purpose of community empowerment and building.

In a time when some institutions of higher learning overlook vocational training, The UWIOC Antigua and Barbuda acknowledges the importance of vocational certification. The Site’s leader and MP Matthew firmly assert that training and certification serves as a catalyst for skills development and employability. They were confident that the students received training that is mapped with the industry standards.
