The politics of lies, disinformation, hogwash and the dumbing down of our Nation

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston A. Browne

“There seems to be developing in our politics a culture of deception,” says Prime Minister Browne when asked to comment on recent developments during the lead up to the January elections and during the recent Budget debates in the House of Representatives.

Prime Minister Browne who took time out to pen the first in a series of articles on the issue of the deliberate bending of the culture of politics in Antigua and Barbuda with lies and disinformation, pointed out that those in the opposition who peddle blatant lies, whether they are incapable of any higher intellectual standard or due to the fact that they have adopted lies as a technique for national disruption, run the risk of seriously undermining democracy and the rule of law in Antigua and Barbuda.

This he said is a slippery slope to anarchy that would irreparably harm the nation and its people.

We are pleased to present the first in a series of articles on the issue tagged The politics of lies, disinformation, hogwash and the dumbing down of our nation.

The politics of lies, disinformation, hogwash and the dumbing down of our nation.

By Gaston A. Browne

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda

The poor quality of the interventions by Opposition members, during the recent debates in the House of Representatives, is cause for grave concern.

Our system is based on representative democracy by which the majority of the electorate in constituencies, elect persons to both represent their concerns and to advance the interests of the nation.

Essential to the success of representative democracy is constructive contributions to the important matters that the nation’s parliament must consider.

Neither the National Assembly nor the Senate are political hustings, where regrettably politicians indulge in smear campaigns, pedaling misleading information, and downright lies. Parliament is the forum for responsible and productive contributions to the nation’s affairs.

The reckless statements, which pass for political conduct, on the hustings should end when representatives enter the chambers of Parliament.

However, it was evident from the statements and behaviour of some of the opposition representatives that they have failed to make the transition from political hustings to parliamentary responsibility. Yet, this transition is necessary if they wish to be seen as capable of being part of a government in the future, and if they are to engage meaningfully and constructively to the nation’s affairs.

Meaningful and constructive engagement does not mean an absence of criticism or disagreement; but it does require thoughtful ideas that are clearly presented and supported by facts and sustainable argument.

That is not the parliamentary diet that the nation was fed by the majority of members of the Opposition during the recent debates. Instead, the presentations lacked intellectual rigor, were pedestrian and replete with lies, misinformation and hogwash.

As if they had not transitioned from the deplorable deceptions of their political meetings to the venerable halls of Parliament, they unpacked the same lamentable litany of vitriolic, personal attacks and deliberate falsehoods that embodied their political campaigning.

Despite the abundance of information and supporting evidence in the estimates and the budget statement, the majority of the opposition representatives were so blinded by their egos, political ambitions, and, maybe, absence of any real and practical ideas, that they fabricated their own facts and imputed improper motives on ABLP Parliamentarians without a scintilla of supporting evidence.

None of this augurs well for their contributions to the nation’s affairs at a time of global turmoil when all hands are needed on deck, and all shoulders are needed at the wheel to navigate the ship of state safely and securely. Nor does it recommend them for positive roles in a government of the future.

Discord and the promotion of unreasoned conflict might pass for techniques in banal political campaigns, but, in Parliament where a higher standard is expected, such behaviour reveals either a lack of basic capacity, or a deliberate attempt to undermine the national welfare by malevolent acts of dishonesty, disinformation, and deception.

I recall that while I served on the opposition benches of the National Assembly, there were members – one of them still a member of the Assembly – who sought vigorously to encourage me to engage in dishonourable behaviour to regain power.

My retort to those individuals was: I’d rather be an ordinary citizen of a successful country, than to be prime minister of a failed state. I refused to participate in any acts that would harm my country that I loved dearly and hoped one day to lead.

I have heard many lies in the National Assembly. Those lies are not constructive to debate of the nation’s affairs.

They are, in themselves, unworthy of a place in parliamentary debate, but when the lies are blatantly entrenched in the consciousness of parliamentary representatives such that they lie shamelessly and irresponsibly, contemptuous of the national good, then we are developing a serious problem in the society.

The resort to blatant lies by representatives either because they are incapable of any higher intellectual standard, or because they have adopted lies as a technique for national disruption, seriously undermines representative democracy and the rule of law in our country. It is a slippery slope to anarchy that would harm the nation and all its people.

There may be no point in appealing to these Opposition politicians to raise the bar of their parliamentary behaviour. But they should be mindful that no society will long tolerate the promotion of discord based on lies, nor will it abide the feckless abandonment of responsibilities by those to whom people entrusted the care of their interest.

Parliament is about attending to the people’s business and not for the pursuit of narrow political ambitions at the expense of the nation’s progress.

  1. … And guess who’s the number ONE culprit for these political lies, disinformation, hogwash, and the dumbing down of our beautiful country?

    G🥸A🥸S🥸T🥸O🥸N B🥸R🥸O🥸W🥸N🥸E

If you can’t stand the fire,🔥 get out of the – political – kitchen … NOW!

      • When you can address the citizens of Antigua & Barbuda about the airline fiasco (political lies), the vaccination mandates (disinformation), and the constant issues with our infrastructure (utter hogwash), then we might believe what you are saying/doing.

        SIMPLE REALLY BOSS!

    • Wow! The words that jumped out are me are “I refused to participate in any acts that would hurt my country that I loved dearly and hoped one day to lead”. Wow! nice sounding words. Immediately coming to my mind is the matter of the Odebrecht scandal in a few months of your ascension to the office of Prime Minister and now the recent human trafficking scandal of our African brothers and sisters from West Africa. Both scandals require thorough investigations given your commitment to the principles democracy and the Rule of Law.

    • Because Antigua & Barbuda deserves a truthful, honest and better leadership, that puts all citizens first @ Johnson.

If, according to you, that this is a “diatribe” then sign me up boss … 🖊

  2. Wow wow wow wow PM Sir I’m trying to understand the article you are just stating that the opposition members are lying Be fair in your Budget Speech the members represented them selves very well it is strange from your members the opposition members were commended on their presentation perhaps you didn’t listen to your AG , Education Minister Chet Green I know how uneasy looking across to see Mr Simon on the other side she love muscle I am worrled I myself can’t respond to this article it is baseless

  3. Why Gaston Browne don’t focus on fixing the ills in the country? No water for 9 years, a city that needs a good power wash, no crease for public servants, roads that need to fix, unemployment rampant. Where the hell does he get the time to be writing a series? Where all the investments he promise? This man is a real pappyshow. We elected him to improve conditions in the country not create more talk and strife. Solutions is what we need not shittacks. Damn fool!

  4. Gaston’s behavior during the 2023 election was a major factor in the labor party’s losses. His actions led to the mobilization of significant funds against the ABLP. If the party wants to succeed in future elections, it should take a closer look at its leadership and make sure that its leader is mentally fit for the job. By doing so, the party can avoid making the same mistakes in the future and focus on its goals.

  5. Mr. Know it all Gaston, you need to go. We prefer to hear all the people you criticize than to hear your blatant calculated LIES. We don’t want you. You and your cabal would make us all happy if you go to sleep and never wake up. You are all a WICKED SET OF PEOPLE!

  6. Why ,tell us why should we read and consume your hogwash. I will be first to admit I don’t know completely what was written in full , but everytime you refer to Asot Michael, you have no credibility to speak to anyone . Gaston you are a punk and you full of shit. You are only a Prome Minister because Chet and others don’t have the finances to get rid of you but your time is short lived. You say Shugy will be the shortest parliamentary rep but while you worry about that study Maria interest in Shugary Candy .

  7. Slowing down your decision-making process and listen deeply to the concerns of the people on the other side is a must as this shows how much you view and care for people in general. The name calling is counter productive. The rhetoric coming out of Parliament is terrible and no one can escape the blame, even you Honourable Prime Minister. To persuade political rivals, it helps to believe in the value of empathizing with them and very little of this happens these days. Today in Antigua, there is an overwhelming public consensus on most issues but political leaders have highly polarized views on the same issues and give little or no regard to how the general public feels. Antigua is too small to be always fighting over things and our leaders must share the blame for the political tribalism that currently exist. We need collaborative problem solving/conflict-resolution processes if we are to settle complex, multiparty disputes and issues that our nation faces.

  8. Did he say “Despite the abundance of information and supporting evidence in the estimates and the budget statement, the majority of the opposition representatives were so blinded by their egos”. Hahahahha me belly!! Keep the pressure on. UPP all the way!!
You hear lie now that is lie

  10. People , let us not be sidetracked, this CLOWN is trying to deflect attention from the Antigua Airlines fiasco. Clown Brown your time is running out. The files will soon be out and trust me when the vault is opened you will be exposed.

  11. Seems like somebody trying to cover up something or cause blame. All of a sudden pot calling kettle black. Fix the issues you said you are going fix when campaign was on- water, electricity, roads, Liat & Jolly Beach workers, pensioners, housing, health care, education, etc.,etc., etc. If you have time to pen a series of articles it means you are not doing anything to help Nationals or fulfill your campaign promises. BTW: What evidence is there to substantiate your claim of lies?

  12. If this isn’t the classic case of “the pot calling the kettle…….” I don’t know what is.

  13. This a well-written article. Well-intentioned. This could be directed to the US Senate and the US House of Representatives. Political representation all over the Wolrd need to be held to account.

  14. Does anyone know what brand of hair dye Gaston uses to dye his stache? That dye ah say one!!

  15. Babylon your kingdom is falling!
You are in Court in Nigeria where big corruption meets little corruption and decide to cum together! The Union produced a kid called Olabanjo. Ola wanted to be rich and so he became tight with the Dawg which guarded the riches of the small corrupt island.
Soon the plan to defraud was put in place and the unsuspected and ill-informed Africans were encouraged to deposit their savings into the crooked scheme. Who would believe that a Prime Minister of a small island would seek to tangle up himself and his minuscule population in migrant trafficking with a unknown black mafia of international repute introduced by Ola.
Soon after the African Atlantic migrant route was established the US government called a meeting of the islands who sold passports and threatened them with dissolution of their enrichment schemes.
Antigua had a more elaborate job to perform for its migrant trafficking, Antigua had to do penance by joining America in the Russian war against Ukraine. Antigua must sell the US sanctioned Russian owned Superyacht! Antigua must be the dupe that creates the precedent of the sales of sanctioned assets of Russian, for the large countries to follow its example! This would enrage Putin into dumping all over Antigua till is sinks to the bottom of the Caribbean Sea!
Thus endeth the Dawg and his people!

  16. Burfool – whom i one admired as a Journalist I now hate to see him on our national TV. Last night he read this entire article on ABS news. It was disgraceful.

  17. Punching Down and Lying is your specialty boss!
You have no moral authority to be lecturing about the peddling lies; that’s a standard YOU have set for this nation — either you have no self awareness, or you suffer from a narcissistic personality disorder.

For those who understands that the NWO/Great Reset is upon us, ANU’s leader is setting the ground works for where the blame should be laid when the unrest that is inevitable comes. More gaslighting to come!

  18. The headline says it all AND it’s all coming from Porkston Browne herself. She talking about herself in the third person. Her cronies don’t even have the balls to stand up to her. Our nation is constantly sinking into dubious territory.

Her loyal ass kissers and table scrap beneficiaries will hopefully come to their senses at some point and we can finally get her out of politics permanently and get back all the crown lands and money he stole from us. I hope DCA is looking at how certain people have acquired crown land just like that.

Antigua is for Antiguans and its people. Antigua is not owned by or for Porkston Browne as she thinks it is to do as she likes.

You voted her in, now you can deal with all the repercussions.

  19. Don’t be fooled folks … this is written by the Ambassador who writes often on Latin American political affairs.
He has been the ABLP political strategist going back to Lester Bird days.
As a professional journalist he writes the ABLP speeches and advises on political strategy.
This political propaganda and Psychological projection which is defined as a defense mechanism people subconsciously employ in order to cope with difficult feelings or emotions. Psychological projection involves projecting undesirable feelings or emotions onto someone else, rather than admitting to or dealing with the unwanted feelings or the very actions for which they are responsible.
Ambassador we are in to your game.

  20. If All you UPP OPERATIVES try to digest this article written by Hon. Gaston Browne, it will be better for our Country. UPP OPERATIVES are just out to CRITICIZE instead of speaking truth to power. Take off the blinders. BRIXTONIAN and the others are paid OPERATIVES of UPP. That is the reason UPP will be in Opposition forever. Try to recruit proper Candidates who can debate issues instead of walking out of Parliament. They are a bunch of noise makers. Shame on.UPP. Hon. Gaston Browne this is an EXCELLENT article.

    • If YOU say so JOHN.P. … don’t you like opposing viewpoints or freedom of speech – thought not! 😁

      • …oh, and BTW, how come when Brixtonian makes valid political points, I’ve yet to read any good responses or answers from Gaston Browne supporters?

Strange that! Can’t they string two words together?

    • I suppose that you got your mandate via a tongue-lashing and that’s why you had to comment, even it’s all garbage. You are nothing short of being a mercenary.

    • This is what is soo wrong with the whole world. Dishonourable people are being titled with ” The honourable” this and that by simply being elected for a job. Shouldn’t a janitor, maid, garbage collector be called honourable for doing the most dirty work?
What’s really makes a person honourable?
Should liars, scammers, self enrichers putting themselves above those they are supposed to serve be considered honourable? Where does not keeping promises made, lying to achieve a outcome, neglecting the most vulnerable in the nation fit into being honourable? Is verbally assaulting your country’s citizens honourable?

It never ceases to amaze me, how superficial societies are, and how little we honour those that are truly honourable.

    • @ JOHN.P.

I agree it is an ‘excellent’ article, because anything Gaston says is Gospel, and not even Jehovah can convince you Labourites otherwise.

ABLP in 10 years NEVER WALKED out of parliament. They were always present for debates and never made noise disrupting the Speaker.
Do you think we are stupid? Do not patronise us. There is no politician in the world LIARD than GB.

    • Did you hear Ms. Govia’s contribution in the Senate? What did she contribute? After eight years all she could talk about was UPP. I felt sorry for her. But then again she sounded like Maria Browne.

    • @John P.
Gaston did not write the article. He is not capable. When all the article can say is that the UPP lies, what does that tell you. Gaston wants no opposition and have to resort to say opposition lie. Typical crooked response.

  21. Gaston, do you really want an opposition, or do you want to run the country like a dictatorship with your bunch of merry men who are afraid to challenge you? Are you afraid of being exposed so you cry lies, lies, lies. Tell us the lies. The opposition has been in parliament for two months and they are already getting under your skin, I hope they stay there. You like phrases like “lack of capacity” and “Incapable of higher intellectual Standard”
You are the only one in Antigua that God gave intellectual standard and capacity. You sound like a pompous arrogant fool.
Don’t worry, you are going to be exposed. Post your diploma on line for everyone to see.

  22. GASTON YOU TOO TOO LIE, HOW COULD THE LAWSUIT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ANTIGUA AND THOSE PASSPORTS THE MEN ARE SUING FOR ARE THE PROPERTY OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA.

GASTON ARE YOU SAYING ANTIGUA HAS NO AUTHORITY OVER WHO CAN GET ITS PASSPORT?

GASTON ARE YOU SAYING THAT THESE MEN CAN GO TO COURT AND DEMAND ANTIGUA PASSPORTS AND ANTIGUA CAN’T DO NOTHING ABOUT IT?
IF THAT’S THE CASE HOW COULD YOU SAY IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANTIGUA AND OUR PASSPORTS ARE INVOLVED.

GASTON HOW DO YOU KNOW THE LAWSUIT IS DEFUNCT?

GASTON YOU HAVE DONE SO MUCH DAMAGE TO ANTIGUA AND IT’S NAME THAN ANY OTHER PRIME MINISTER OR PREMIER IN THE HISTORY OF ANTIGUA.,

LOOK AT THIS IT IS A QUOTE FROM A PART OF THE LAWSUIT

” the duo is asking the court for their initial partnership agreement of US$1 million in finder’s fees; 6 percent of the projected audited annual revenue of the airline; and three of the 10 Antigua and Barbuda passports handed over to the investors by the Gaston Browne Administration.”
AND GASTON BROWNE IS TELLING US THE LAWSUIT IS DEFUNCT AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANTIGUA.

HE WOULD NOT TELL US WHY HE HAD TO GIVE THEM 10 OF OUR PASSPORTS,

WHAT IS THE JUSTIFICATION FOR THAT GASTON?

WHAT BENEFIT HAS ANTIGUA RECEIVED FOR THE GIVING AWAY OF 10 OF OUR PASSPORTS?

WITHIN ONE MONTH OF THE FLIGHT WE DISCOVERED THAT THIS PLANE FULL OF PEOPLE WERE NEITHER TOURISTS OR INVESTORS, THEY WERE REFUGEES, SO I ASK YOU AGAIN GASTON BROWNE WHAT AND WHERE ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOU GIVING AWAY 10 OF OUR PASSPORTS TO THE POINT THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING AND DEMANDING THEIR SHARE.
WHAT HELP DID THAT DO TO OUR ECONOMY GASTON?
WHAT BENEFITS DID THE TREASURY RECEIVE FROM THIS GASTON?

YOU HAVE DONE MORE HARM TO THIS COUNTRY THAN ANY OPPOSITION YOU SPOKE ABOUT.
GASTON BROWNE PROMISED ANTIGUA PEOPLE RICH AFRICAN INVESTORS AND AFRICAN TOURISTS AND 2 MONTHS INTO THIS LYING HYPE LOOK AT THIS ARTICLE FROM THE CABINET.

The Antigua and Barbuda government is seeking the assistance of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in dealing with the situation regarding migrants from West Africa.
Government spokesman, Lionel “Max” Hurst said representatives of the two international organizations will be here to probe the situation and make recommendations. Last month, the government said that 637 of the more than 900 people who touched down between November and January remained in Antigua. Many of them are Cameroonians fleeing a bloody conflict back home.

But it is unclear how many of them are seeking asylum having arrived here on Antigua Airways or other chartered airlines.
“The Cabinet…instructed Ambassador Daven Joseph to construct some guidelines by which both UNHCR and IOM could operate in Antigua and Barbuda,” he said, adding that it is also hoped that their report “reflects the reality here for the West African migrants.
AFTER GASTON SAY THEY WERE RICH BUSINESSS MEN AND TOURISTS HE AND HIS
CABINET ARE NOW CALLING THEM REFUGEES.

    QUESTION

GASTON , ARE YOU NOW CALLING ON THE U N TO GIVE ANTIGUA MONEY TO SOLVE A PROBLEM THAT YOU HAVE CREATED?
OR WAS THIS YOUR PLAN ALL ALONG GASTON, TO CREATE A CRISIS AND BEG FOR MONEY TO HELP SOLVE IT?

    I’M NOT ACCUSING, I’M JUST INQUIRING !

    ENCLOSING
GASTON YOU REALLY, REALLY FULL OF SHXX.

  23. Pm. You let me want to scream. You taking about lies and deception? Omg. When it comes to good representation in parliament check upp reps, you and your wife is now making a serious mockery of our parliament and our democracy. You need to grow up.

  24. It would have been a lot easier to just go on his radio station or Facebook and just cuss them off as usual but I guess the honorable PM realizes that his loyal audience on those platforms is not as large as he thought. Please note Mr. PM that although other mediums such as this will give reach outside of your usual thought-consumer base, their users will not be as easily satisfied with the same poor quality message and lack of facts.

How about explaining to us how somebody fly 3 big plane full of refugees under your nose?

  25. I have seen things that Gaston Browne has written, and I wonder if he wrote this. Gaston Browne YOU are the biggest liar in Antigua and Barbuda. All that was stated by the opposition to include Asot Michael, you had an opportunity to address in your wrap up, yet you did not, but now you want to put some bogus, misleading garbage into this forum to seek relevancy?
In this article, you did not debunk anything. Just making all kinds of dumb, politically correct statements. There are many university graduates here Gaston Browne, and you cant feed them crap.
The Antigua Airways thing is falling apart around you and its only a matter of time before we find out what that scam was all about.
I listened to your so-called budget speech, and I spent most of the time laughing. You had no data to support the $140 million in savings you claim; you want to take credit for the social programs that you met. Where is the audited report of the government finances to include the statuary boards required by law, so Antiguans and Barbudans can see what you have done with tax payers money and all the money you have borrowed?
Please spare us and do not write any more of theses things.

  26. ONE THOUGHT OR TWO
“The first in a series of articles…” Swinging for Sixes! Wow!

Is this article the first production of UWI Five Islands Campus ChatGPT (Artificial Intelligence) display?

Let us interact with humility, grace, good intentions!

Save our Humanity, Save our Youths, Save our Environment, Save our Soil!!!

    Respect

  27. Well well well the Gaston haters are out in numbers. You think they would carry on an intelligent discussion? Hell NO. It’s all about PM Bashing. I think the UPP should change their names into “DECEPTICONS”. Like in Autobots. The PM, ‘Optimus Prime’, has done his duty. He has warned the nation about what is going on. This is the Trump ‘FAKE NEWS’ Eara. It’s happening all over the world. People don’t know what to believe anymore. We saw it during the height of the pandemic. I have very educated people still believing that Bill Gates had something to do with the pandemic, as he tries to control the world. Thye vaccine have chips in them that allows Bill Gates to track you. Anyway. The people of this good nation are warned.

    • Stop resorting to the word “hate” @ From The Sideline, you keep using it to try and dampen down good debates from opposing viewpoints.

Stop this foolishness! And It’s lazy …

Please accept that there are people in this great country that have a differing viewpoint than yours.

UP YOUR GAME BOSS, YOUR ANXIETY IS EVIDENT!

      • Brix does it hurts that much when you hear the truth. You guys are haters. You cannot see nothing right in what the PM does.
And this quote is also for you guys in the UPP camp
“An evil man will burn his own nation to the ground to rule over the ashes. – Sun Tzu”
Sun Tzu was a Chinese military general, strategist, philosopher, and writer who lived during the Eastern Zhou period of 771 to 256 BCE.
And the PM has said he’d rather be an ordinary citizen in a prosperous state than to be King in a failed state. Not you guys. Always tearing down Antigua and Barbuda. At any cost.

        • Not really boss, but I have noticed in your recent correspondences that instead of replying to 3 valid concerns of Antiguans, you are resorting to “hate” speech as you put it!

I’M SURE THAT YOU DONT HATE JAMALE PRINGLE!

Again, I can only speak for myself as a former ABLP and Gaston Browne supporter, he has let the country down due to his broken manifesto promises and self-enrichment schemes, all to the detriment of the country that I love vehemently.

Step up your debates From The Sideline?

I do take note of decent debates from opposing viewpoints, however, you seem to now be resorting to soundbites that appeal to the unintelligible, ignorant and the devoid ABLP populous …

        • @From The Sideline
If you believe the PM would rather be an ordinary citizen you are fooling yourself and the PM is fooling you. This man just loves power and will do anything to keep it. Like bringing in non nationals to vote for him. And when the people voted for an opposition, after just two months the PM is dumbing down the people of Antigua by calling the opposition liars. The man you are obsessed with is crazy for power and otherwise.

      • The man ole what you expect? Is so ole people ramble and talk what their weak minds think. Especially if their needs demand they earn their tips.

    • Sadly @ From The Sideline you are blind to the destabilising and destructive damage that Prime Minister Gaston Browne is causing the country – how sad!

      • I wonder who is really blind. He who cannot see anything good in whatever the PM does. or doesn’t think he should acknowledge the contribution he made to education by ensuring we now have a UWI Campus here and our children can access tertiary education right here at home. But he applauds the contribution from others to the very same university. You are nothing but a Gaston hater and will never be objective in your comments. It is Gaston Browne that has always put Antigua and Barbuda first in every international forum he is invited to speak. No wonder he is admired by so many. And is given the jacket to lead the SIDS in their quest for climate justice. He led the Caribbean against the USA D-Risking efforts. You have not heard anything lately about D-Risking, as if the threat never existed.
