The Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams officially declared the third Cardiac Symposium open on February 26, 2022. The symposium, organized by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Antigua and Barbuda (HSFAB) was held under theme, “Heart Disease in Special Populations” in an online modality.

The Governor General in his address declared that seminars of this nature serve to refresh and encourage healthcare providers. He further stated that when doctors, nurses, caregivers, patients, and the general public have an understanding of common diseases and their management, then fear and hopelessness is replaced by courage and hope and goes a long way in enabling patients with heart disease and strokes to live more meaningful and productive lives.

Sir Rodney also highlighted the fact that the government’s health policy gives priority to cardiovascular diseases and includes their treatment options under the Medical Benefits Scheme. This provision, coupled with extensive research by institutions such as our University of the West Indies, provides a significant level of hope for patients with cardiovascular disease

Also speaking at the conference were medical practitioners from the local, regional and international fraternities on topics related to cardiology, nephrology, neurology and paediatric medicine. The symposium was also addressed by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rhonda Sealy-Thomas who shared that the national health sector has been responsive to the new treatments for cardiovascular diseases which have come on board.  Dr Georgette Meade, the President and Founder of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Antigua and Barbuda welcomed the participants and gave a brief overview of the topics which included congenital heart disease and treatment of patients with cardiac and renal disease.
