American football is a game that dominates the consciousness of the American people. The sport has never gotten much popularity outside of the United States. However, the popularity that it enjoys within the country is immense. The Super Bowl alone is one of the most popular sporting events in the world, with very few Americans unaware of its existence.
The sport also enjoys huge popularity at various bookmakers, whether they be online or offline. At most online betting sites available in the United States, the websites have noticed that American football bets increase drastically during the football season. As we are currently entering the football season, sportsbooks all over are setting up odds, looking at favorites and, in fact the odds for NFL week one have already been released for the 2022/23 season.
When speaking about American football, the position that most are familiar with and the most celebrated position is the quarterback. In this article, we would like to look at a few of NFL’s top quarterbacks today, and discuss what makes them great.
A relatively new addition to the NFL, Josh Allen joined the Buffalo Bills in 2018, four years ago, when he was chosen seventh in the NFL Draft. Josh Allen had a rocky start, performing inconsistently during the first couple of years of his career. However, in 2020, this all changed. Whether it was experience or just the need to adapt to professional play, we don’t know. But whatever the case may be, Allen had his breakout season that year, and took his team to their first division title win in the playoffs in 25 years.
During that year, he also earned his team the All-Pro honors and got them the Pro Bowl. In 2021, Josh Allen also brought a consecutive title division victory to the Buffalo Bills. Simultaneously, he became the first quarterback in the NFL history to score a touchdown drive on every offensive position.
Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and the son of Major League Baseball pitcher, Pat Mahomes. He was drafted by the chiefs in 2017 in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and was the 10th overall pick. The Chiefs certainly have not regretted their choice since, as Patrick Mahomes has proven to be one of the best quarterbacks playing today, becoming the only QB aside from Peyton Manning to throw 5000 yards and 50 touchdown passes in a single season both in the NFL and in college football.
Unlike Allen, Mahomes brought his A game from the very start. During his first season he won several awards, including the NFL Most Valuable Player Award, the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award, and was named to the Pro Bowl. Certainly, he deserves to hold the rank as one of the greats playing today.
Chosen by the Baltimore Ravens during the 2018 NFL Draft, Lamar Jackson has spent the past 4 years showing that he is on the road to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. During his college years he showed quite a bit of potential, winning the Heisman Trophy in his sophomore year. When he was elected to join the Ravens, Jackson proved that the choice was the right one, when he set the season record for rushing yards in his second year in the professional league.
This, on top of his other accomplishments and contributions to his team earned him a unanimous Most Valuable Player award, making Lamar the second player to ever get a unanimous call for MVP, as well as the fourth African-American to win the award.
Last, but not least, Tom Brady, who is still active at 45 years old deserves a mention. While he may not bring it as hard as he did 10 years ago, the fact that he can keep up with all the young bucks in his 40s certainly earns Brady a spot on the list. And certainly, he still can throw over 5000 yards and score over 40 touchdowns in a season.
While the next generation is proving their worth, as we can see from the three other picks on this list, Brady proves that the old guard also has what it takes to keep up.
