The Antigua and Barbuda Commonwealth Games Association (ABCGA) is thrilled to announce the selection of our team for the upcoming 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, set to take place in Trinidad and Tobago from August 4th to 11th, 2023.
Our team will consist of exceptional athletes from two of our leading Olympic and Commonwealth Sports disciplines: Swimming and Athletics.
We are proud to present a group of talented individuals who have demonstrated their skills and dedication in their respective sports.
The Athletics team comprises several medalists from the recently held NACAC U18 Championships.
Leading the way is Kasiya Daley, a double gold medalist who will proudly serve as our male Flag Bearer.
Joining him are Bronze Medalist Dwayne Fleming, Cleon Joseph, along with silver medalist, La’Nika Locker, and Geolyn Dowdye as part of the female team.
The Athletics Team official will be Heather Samuel Daley.
Representing our Swimming Federation is Ellie Shaw, our National Junior Sportswoman who will carry the flag for the female swimmers.
Aunjelique Liddie will also represent us as a female swimmer. Tivon Benjamin and Ethan Stubbs-Green, national record holders in swimming events, form our male swimming team. J’air Smith has been appointed as their manager.
We are pleased to announce that Ms. Karen Joseph has been selected as Team Leader (Chef de Mission), while Mr. Eric Henry will serve as Assistant Team Leader and Administrator during this prestigious event.
Additionally, we are honored to have ABCGA President Honorable E.P. Chet Greene and Secretary General Mr. Cliff Williams in attendance.
The ABCGA holds high expectations for these athletes representing us at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
While the CYG has not set a specific qualifying process, we have relied on the expertise and selection of our National Federations to identify the best athletes for this event.
We hold these federations responsible for ensuring our athletes perform at their best.
“Our goal is to assemble a team of true competitors, not just participants. We expect our athletes to showcase their skills and strive for excellence in every event they compete in.
Furthermore, we are committed to monitoring their progress and providing ongoing support through a development plan that extends from the CYG to the senior Commonwealth Games in 2026”, said Cliff Williams, Secretary General, ABCGA
“In essence, we aim to retain this group of talented individuals and assist them in reaching their full potential, with the ultimate goal of achieving outstanding performances at the Senior Commonwealth Games in 2026”.
The Commonwealth Youth Games provide an incredible platform for young athletes to gain valuable experience and showcase their abilities on an international stage.
We are confident that our team will represent Antigua and Barbuda with pride, determination, and sportsmanship.
