“Antigua Sailing Week is 55 years old. We have marked our place in nautical history and this is definitely a deserving milestone that is worth celebrating,” said the Hon. Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez, Minister of Tourism who officially welcomed the 750 crew from 22 countries to the 55th Antigua Sailing Week (ASW).

Minister Fernandez made special mention of the Youth to Keel participants who will be racing this week: “To the approximate 48 youths who will get the chance to join seasoned sailors onboard their vessels, make every positive use of the opportunity. As the future of this industry is yours and congratulations to the Antigua National Sailing Academy for helping to pave the way.”
“We do not have to look further than our own Junella King, you have made everyone in the sailing community and throughout Antigua and Barbuda, including myself proud.”
King is a graduate of the Youth to Keel programme and a member of the first all-female crew of Maiden Factor, who won the around the world yacht race ‘Macintyre Ocean Globe’ race.
Peters & May Round Antigua race was won by Dawn Treader, whilst the three day Wingfoil Championship was won by Idani Edward of Antigua and Barbuda, who set a new long distance record of 29 minutes.
Visitors, and crews enjoyed a cultural presentation by the Original Steel Orchestra and cultural dancers on the Antigua Yacht Club lawn. They also had an opportunity to shop and discover locally made items in the Artisan Market.

“The beauty of this regatta is that it embraces our rich cultural diversity as we Race, Chase and Celebrate. Today’s opening is a taste of what we have planned over the next six days where each evening we will feature local bands and DJs as part of the post race celebration,” states Rana Lewis, ASW Event Manager.
Antigua Sailing Week’s first race is the English Harbour Rum Race.
