A woman has been ordered to repay $10,000 in rent arrears after a court heard she had not paid rent since April 2020.

Landlord Simon Kennedy brought the case before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, seeking to recover $9,000 in unpaid rent. Legal fees pushed the total to $10,000.

Magdalene Prince, who still occupies the property, represented herself and admitted she was behind on payments, though she said she had resumed paying rent.

Her initial offer to repay $150 monthly was rejected as inadequate. A compromise was later reached for her to pay $300 a month. If she is unable to meet the terms, the court will help relocate her.

The first payment is due at Kennedy’s attorney’s office at the end of June.

  1. That judge stupid to make that call, 5yrs n she still living there… He was getting paid in another form but now it done the landlord wa try play spiteful

By the first month, you done a get notice for non payment so 5yrs nuh possible

  2. People have it harder than many would want to suggest. One only have to talk to many landlords and you see how delinquent many tenants are even as many of them are living in less than “favourable” living conditions. The notion that people are doing so well and the economy is booming is a dream, a fantasy and a delusion. Maybe for some but many are living hand to mouth monthly.

  3. This woman gamble too too too too much every day she wan be in a casino thinking she can win all the money and nah pay she rent. Don’t she know that business before pleasure.

  4. I see this man have my sister name on news room like a criminal about owning that rent is far from the true. Antiguan landlords some of them need to respect good honest tenants. Because my sister living in that house since 2008 never once miss one paidment .up till this days until covid came and they lost their jobs things were very hard but they tried to pay thier rent until no money was coming in but she paid. Now the landlord told her dont pay for 6 months rent because the government had put something in place knowing my sister she payed half of the rent for the months.when my sister got a job she started paying him his fully rent now after 2 years he is writing a letter to my sister to bring for her parliamentary to pay him that money because he didn’t get his way send letter on my sister job 2 times is that right my question is if my sister was not paying your house why you still want her to leave there and why you never give her notice why you he always say she is best tenant now he put her name on social media like she committed a crime she own you yet still you ask her to buy a house you have what nonis this people need to talk the truth.

  6. Show me a Landlord who hasn’t collected rent from a Tenant in over 5 years and I’ll show you a Bridge. 🤔 Did anyone stop to think that Landlord was being paid differently, 👠 and now di bacchanal dun the Tenant is facing the gun? 🤔 Think smartly, and don’t let A.I. do all the Brainstorming 🧠 for us. 😂

  7. One more year before the statute of limitations kicks in. The landlord lucky because if one more year had passed he would not be able to collect any money.

  8. The sister is now blaming the landlord for having her sister’s name on ANR, while on the other hand giving us her sister’s life journey.
As a good, caring and loving family member, knowing your your sister’s default why didn’t you take her in to live with you until she could stand on her feet again?
I didn’t see the word eviction or vacate of residence, so if you calculate the math’s she still comes out a winner. 10,000 still having a roof over your head, 300 monthly, when will this be paid off? Wadadli nice.

  9. Losing your job doesn’t mean your obligation to pay rent goes away. I’m sure the landlord recognized the tenant wasn’t working due to covid and afforded her some lenienc… hence no eviction notice. However, the landlord is still entitled to his rent and the arrears. If there was some other agreement, it should’ve been put in writing; he say/she say aren’t good court evidence.

  10. When you give tenants notice they stop paying and then say they can’t find a place to move to and wants to stay in your house for months even years and the court wouldn’t do anything about it
