Team Antigua Island Girls Honored with Institutional Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Endeavors

Celebrations for Antigua and Barbuda’s 43rd anniversary of independence were marked by the presentation of the prestigious Institutional Award—the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage Gold—to Team Antigua Island Girls.

This award recognizes their remarkable journey across the Pacific Ocean in support of a noble cause: rowing for troubled girls.

The team, comprised of Crystal Clashing, Kevinia Francis, Samara Emmanuel, and Elvira Bell, embarked on the daunting Pacific Challenge Race on June 12, 2023.

Over 35 days, these courageous women navigated approximately 2,800 nautical miles in a compact rowboat measuring just 9.6 meters by 1.5 meters, beginning their expedition from the United States West Coast and concluding in Hawaii. Their achievement showcased unparalleled determination and resilience.

Not only did Team Antigua Island Girls conquer the vastness of the Pacific, but they also served as role models for young women in Antigua and Barbuda.

Their advocacy for women’s empowerment and support for girls in need of second chances has inspired hope and resilience in many. Their incredible journey garnered attention from prestigious media outlets, including CNN, CBS, and the BBC, significantly raising awareness of Antigua and Barbuda on the global stage.

Presented during the anniversary celebrations, the Institutional Award acknowledges the team’s invaluable contributions to humanitarian efforts, reflecting their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Team Antigua Island Girls now stands as a beacon of inspiration, representing the strength and potential of women in the Caribbean.
