Teachers threaten to take action on Tuesday, PM Browne warns against it

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is warning teachers against taking industrial action on Tuesday over school security.

In a letter to Browne the teachers are demanding 24-security at all schools by Monday.

  2. I agree with the teachers to have more “robust” security at the schools. Now the government needs to hold dem same teachers responsible and to the task of teaching our children. Penalize them when they go on extensive sick leaves, when they fail to show up for classes often, when they underperform and it reflects in the results.

    As it is now, many of these schools, taking credit for results that are really due to the after classes parents spending money to send their children.

    So yes, secure the schools, but also demand that all the teachers work for the money they are paid.

  7. The growth of burglaries, vandalism and thefts In our schools has been an issue for a while now.

    I remember the outcry to the government to do something about it; and Gaston Browne’s silence was deafening like other crime issues in Antigua.

    It should not take a letter from teachers to get a reaction like this from our Prime Minister to take notice.

    As I’ve said before, that this is all a result of him doing too much dancing abroad instead of dealing with URGENT matters at home@

    • Every night A GOVERNMENT SCHOOL is Broken into. You have Mary E Pigotts, OCS and Adventist School on the same road in the same vicinity and there is no over night security at none but is only Mary E Pigotts and OCS are Broken into, for some it’s just to defecate on the desk or to just break the AC Unit, just to steal a printer…. this is organized crime

  11. Teachers are human like all other workers and perform many different roles during a school day. It is unfortunate that some schools, public schools are saddled with children who have never been to schools in their native homelands and are joining school for the first time in a Grdae 5 or 6 class or children who are branded as being slow in other schools and are expected to write a national assessment. The playing field needs to be leveled then we an have a discussion about results and teacher performance. Safety in the workplace is paramount. Let us not act as though the union is just making this request now, security was promised long ago and the promise was not kept. It was on the table long ago.

  14. There was another big fight in front of Princess Margaret school on Friday afternoon. After the chopping incident the mobile police were on patrol for a week then stopped. The Ministry really wants to hear that there is a murder one of these days. Some of these schools need serious security.

  17. GB it’s like you alone carrying the fight on the behalf of ABLP to the opposition. The reason being that you have now empowered your ministers to speak freely. When there is an issue with Water/ APUA you respond, health you respond and don’t talk about housing. Where is the Minister of Education. Is he still away at the funeral of the X Japanese PM. That is still not an excuse because he could still answer via the social media. This is what happens when you surround yourself with bunch of yes men.
