Taxi Association Raises Alarm Over Surge in Illegal Operators, Citing Safety Risks

1

The Antigua and Barbuda National Taxi Association is raising concerns about the growing number of illegal taxi operators using private vehicles with ‘A’ or ‘C’ plates.

These operators bypass essential training, licensing, and character checks, undermining the safety and integrity of the industry.

The association, representing over 200 taxi operators, also highlights the challenges that legitimate drivers face in obtaining firearms licenses, despite fulfilling all police requirements, further exacerbating safety risks in the transportation sector.

Athill has been elected president of the Antigua and Barbuda National Taxi Association, the country’s largest, marking the first leadership change in a decade.

The new executive team, elected at this week’s Annual General Meeting, includes Denley Millette as Vice President, Sherry Murraine as General Secretary, and other key officers. They will serve a two-year term, succeeding longtime president Daniel Tittle, who led for five terms.
