The end of summer vacation means that students are getting ready to head back to school.

But paying for new school supplies can have a significant financial impact on some families. With back-to-school shopping in full swing, parents in Bolans welcomed a free school supplies giveaway, on Sunday, organized by Hon. Kelvin Simon in collaboration with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

“Many families continue to struggle to afford the basics and providing necessary back-to-school supplies can be an added financial hardship. If parents have to choose between paying the electricity bill or paying for school supplies, they are often forced to choose to keep the lights on,” M.P. Simon said.

Over 250 bookbags were distributed that were packed with notebooks, pens, highlighters, glue, scissors, folders, pencils, markers and lunch bags. The products included popular brands such as Nike, Puma, Adidas and characters of popular cartoon shows.

There was also a community fun day that featured entertainment, bounce castle, trampoline, bubbles, light refreshments and face painting.

Representing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated NJGCAC was Dr. Shedia R. Laguer who has Antiguan roots. Her mother is from Urlings and her father is from Liberta.

Community members expressed sincere gratitude for this charitable initiative that provided students with the tools for academic success. Many parents welcomed the free school supplies as it will help to offset some of the back-to-school costs and alleviate financial hardship.

“I am extremely grateful to the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated NJGCAC for their partnership. We also donated stationery to the administrative office, 7 tablets, puzzles, storybooks for the library and notebooks. These donations were made directly to the principal.

The school yard at R. Olivia David Primary was filled with the sound of laughter and children having fun. This joyful occasion was grounded in service and community,” M.P. Simon said.

A similar FREE school supply giveaway will be held at Urlings Primary School on Thursday August 22nd from 3pm until stocks last.
