Students at the Antigua State College (ASC), who are experiencing difficulties in paying for their Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), are poised to benefit from a monetary donation from the Rotary Club of Antigua (RCA).

On Monday, the President of the Club, Kevin Silston, presented a cheque $EC 2,500 to the academic institution’s Acting Principal, Jacqueline Peters-Richardson in a brief ceremony held on ASC’s compound. The amount will represent bursaries, which will assist about five students.

In his remarks, the Club’s President explained that the focus for the 2020-2021 Rotary Year is on youth and their development.

“This contribution is in accordance with that focus. We do recognize the challenging economic climate that we are facing and the importance of supporting our youth in such a critical time. This project is dear to my heart as the Antigua State College is an important institution to us. Many of us Rotarians are past students and we are very happy that we can assist in this way,” he said.

In response, ASC’s Acting Principal thanked the Club for the contribution on behalf of the college, bursaries, its students and their parents. She added that it will certainly assist students who are unable to meet the financial obligation of paying their fees.

“When I checked, there were at least 400 students with outstanding payments to the college. With outstanding tuition and CAPE examination fees that totaled over EC $160,000. Based on my assessment, quite a lot of students will not be able to meet the outstanding payments. As an educator, I cannot accept that persons who perform good in school are held back due to their inability to meet payments,” she explained.

The bursaries will be awarded to 2nd students, who have maintained good academic standing but are experience economic challenges.
