St. Kitts-Nevis suspends flights from the UK

British Airways (BA) flights between the United Kingdom (UK) and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis have been suspended for two weeks, from Saturday, December 26, 2020, to Saturday, January 2, 2021, as a safety measure after a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 Virus (Novel Coronavirus) was discovered in the United Kingdom.

The announcement was made at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) COVID-19 Briefing on December 23, 2020, by Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hazel Laws.

The Federation joins several other countries worldwide in instituting the suspension to monitor the situation so as not to put their populations at risk.

On 14th December 2020, authorities in the United Kingdom reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) the new variant of the Novel Coronavirus.

Cases of the new variant have been detected outside of the UK. Cases were detected in Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, and South Africa, all resulting from travel.

Scientists have reported that the new variant of the Novel Coronavirus has higher transmissibility, estimated between 40 and 70 percent. However, their initial analysis suggests there is no change in the severity of illness or the mortality rate, no reports of poorer clinical outcomes, no higher mortality, and no specific population group that has been affected.

Additionally, there is currently no evidence that the mutations in the spike protein will affect vaccine efficacy.

  1. Way to go Dr. Harris. You are clearly a very intelligent and visionary leader. I can see why St. Kitts/Nevis is forging ahead and serious positive social and economic development is taking place. I can recall interacting with you when I worked for the OECS Economic Affairs Secretariat, you are indeed a great leader.

    • You do know this move has nothing to do with health but more politics in SKN? Guy really a one week ban? What will change in a week all of the UK will get the vaccine? How many UK persons truly travel during the closure period. Would bet you that its really a slow time for travel. Look I get you are all about optics hence why you support UPP, but the covid crisis is no political game. Boss the WHO has advised against this move, and most countries in the Caribbean region for eg Barbados, will not be imposing a ban

“This is what BDS officials are saying:

Flights from the United Kingdom (UK) will not be banned at this time.

But Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic indicated they were being vigilant about the new COVID-19 strain, which has caused some countries to impose restrictions on travel to and from the UK.

“The advice from WHO/PAHO is that we should not restrict flights coming from the UK at this time because what is known of the variant does not suggest we should do that. To be honest, this thing has been around I believe from September and it is not only in the UK, it’s also in Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy and other countries.”

  2. Will Antigua ban flights from the UK too? Hell no, they love and worship white people too much! But they will ban black peoples countries like DR…smh
