Miss St Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority, Sheniqua Lanns, is the new National Carnival Queen. Lanns, who amassed 1280.5 points, won the prestigious title after hours of intense competition at the Sugar Mill. She was crowned by Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Shawn Richards, at approximately 3 a.m. on December 29.

The commencement of Lanns’ reign was signaled by a fireworks salute, moments after her coronation.

Lanns capped the individual awards of Best Swimwear, Best National Pride Costume and Best Performing Talent. She was also adjudged Ms Photogenic.

One of the crowd favorites, Miss Big Cane Rum, Sarafina Osborne, won the first runner up position. She amassed 1266.5 points, an indication of how keenly contested the pageant was. Miss Osborne also won the individual awards of Best Interview, Best Question and Answer and Best Evening Wear.

The second runner up position was secured by Miss National Bank, Cornella Daniel. She gave a very solid and consistent performance to tally 1150 points. She also captured the Chairperson’s Award and was the most popular contestant online.

The other contestants in the pageant were Miss Carib Brewery Zonique Browne; Miss Development Bank, Teresa Dias; and Miss Scotia Bank, Beliesa McDonald, who was awarded Miss Amity.

Chairwoman of the National Carnival Queen Committee, Judy Duponte, expressed her profound thanks to everyone who made the show a possibility. She also indicated that she was in deep admiration of all the contestants, whom she noted overcame incredible odds.

“I truly want to say thanks to all of the supporters, to everyone who came out to the pageant last evening, I am truly grateful to you for the support that you’ve shown to these six beautiful young women. Now obviously, it’s the big elephant in the room – as related to the time that the results got in. Last year, I crowned the 45th Queen at 12:15 am with hiccups.

“This year we experienced more hiccups than I could have ever imagined or planned for, and in every single segment – I had six segments – and in every single segment the doctor was needed. At one point there was an hour we had to just wait it out because the contestant was away from herself and she had to be closely monitored. It was just a time issue where the committee had to decide in that moment do we wait to see if she recovers, or do we carry on the show, and then you go on to I cannot carry on the show without her because the show has already started. It was just a number of things that added up and before you know it, one or two or three setbacks backstage as related to the delays with the health issues with the contestants – that just added right up to I would say two to two-and-half hours which resulted in the late results.

Even I too was quite tired, I know that it is a show that people come to, that they support it heavily each year, and I want to say thanks again to everyone for that to the general public, but I want to explain to everyone that it really was not flow of the show, it was not the planning, but sometimes this is life and sometimes things happen that you truly cannot predict, and last night I had many, many, many, instances of unpredicted events,” said Duponte.

The hosts for the National Carnival Queen Production were former national carnival queens, Kyla Browne, Iantavian Queeley, Kaeve Armstrong and Gloria Esdaille.

Sugar Mas 46 continues with the Senior Monarch Calypso finals. The finalists are Jack Spanner, Miss Independent, Ayatollah, Zarkie, Socrates, Queen Jackie, Big Lice and Big Edwards. They will come up against the defending king, Craig.
