St. John’s Taxi Association members raised concerns about ongoing unfair competition from unauthorized operators targeting cruise ship passengers illegally.

Vice President Denis Friday Jnr. and Secretary Lesroy Jno Baptiste presented these issues to the Cabinet, requesting increased police presence on cruise days to deter such operators causing economic harm.

The Cabinet acknowledged the problem, promising to strengthen laws against unauthorized operators.

Additionally, the taxi association discussed road conditions in St. John’s and routes to tourist sites, with Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst identifying areas for improvement by year-end due to rapid deterioration from floods and excessive rainfall.

  1. This so called taxi association is ridiculous and a big waste of time. Seems like an ‘association’ for a bunch of lazy drivers to scam tourists and local residents alike.

It’s time for Antigua to legalize Uber and other riding apps in Antigua – it’s 2024 already! It’s time for this dumb association’s monopoly to be terminated.

Why do our Antigua politicians cater so much this ‘association’ that literally does nothing for the actual bona-fide citizens of Antigua?

    • In Antigua everything comes down to the vote, the money, and the trinkets to show off.
Look where they the Taxi Association went; to Cabinet rather than the police, the party responsible for enforcing the laws.
That’s an extension of go see your Minister syndrome

The Cabinet spokesperson in turn blame the floods and excessive rain for the conditions of the road.

It never occurred to him the stupidity of the excuse for the conditions of the roads; which should be an embarrassment.

Who cares when they still get the vote, and there is still money flowing.

The term “excessive rain and floods” highlights the lack of island wide infrastructure with proper management to handle the influx of water, divert it from the roads and into collection facilities to avert water shortages.

  2. I also agree. the time of monopolies and “associations” is over. it is 2024. a taxi is a taxi and should all be held to the same standard with country wide scope. Also uber should be allowed as well.

  5. It’s hard to fathom , that we cannot park in our own capital , only taxi’s servicing tourists . It is crazy when you think about it . It’s crazy when you think there is an alcohol ban island wide except for hotels on Good Friday . What impression does that leave the people with ? You ever see the land Robin ( one of the wealthiest Antiguans ) at devils bridge ( national park land for 2 ec per sqft ) . It is sickening !!!! While the country goes down !!!! This country needs some fresh leadership with actual planning capacity and not self serving idiots !!!
