The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) experienced a fire on Sunday, 19th April 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m.

The Authority has been engaged in distinguishing the fumes; however, Landfill
fires can be challenging and the site remains smoldering with after fumes as the sector affected stored white goods, electronics and old vehicles.

NSWMA would like to publicly thank all government stakeholders specifically the Antigua and Barbuda Fire Department who acted in the emergency situation to gain control of the fire and aid in the extinguishing of the blaze.

We sincerely apologize to the surrounding communities for the disruption and the resulting poor air quality. People with respiratory ailments should remain indoors or take the necessary precautions.

The Landfill remains open; however, users are asked to proceed with caution. The Authority will continue to provide updates on the situation.
