The Cabinet was informed that the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) now has a full time cardiologist.
That professional joins a full-time ophthalmologist, who has served the Medical Center for more than a year.
Six kidney transplants have been undertaken thus far in Antigua, and more kidney transplants are likely to take place.
Transplants are cheaper than dialysis but identifying suitable donors has proven to be a challenge.
A cardiology unit will be placed where the dialysis unit now occupies, and the Renal Unit will be moved to the refurbished Edward Ward at the Old Holberton Hospital.

Are you sure this wasnt done because election is coming, since this has become the cry of spoilt brats vying for government?
The news is great, however the introduction doesn’t do any justice to the Cardiologist and the Antigua and Barbuda public who didn’t get his name and qualifications. Rather poor journalism on what is lovely news for the public.
Soon there will be little or no reasons for people to travel overseas for medical attention. What an impressive performance from this government. To think that 2014 when they came to power this Hospital was lacking even the basic equipment to treat patients. People had to go to private institutions for simple tests and screenings.
This is encouraging news. Our country is moving is advancing in medical care.
