Medical staff on the first, second, and third floors of Sir Lester Bird Medical Center (SLBMC) endure extreme heat as malfunctioning AC units remain unrepaired for over two weeks.
Areas lacking windows leave patients and staff drenched in sweat, hindering adequate care. Despite complaints, no fans have been provided.
An anonymous nurse revealed the unbearable conditions, stating, “We are dying up there.” The hospital management acknowledged technical difficulties with chillers, assuring a resolution.
As a temporary fix, fans will be distributed in affected areas. In response to the crisis, non-patient care employees’ work hours are reduced for relief and improved working conditions.

It’s about time the people of Antigua and Barbuda get fedup with what’s happening at the SLMBC. We have a Government talking big on Jumby Bay, plans for Barbuda, how much ships in the harbour, and how much planes on the Airport tarmac. The reality is that there’s very little SLMBC can do save a tourist in an emergency situation.
You local Antiguans are having your families dying from head injuries, and other medical issues that are really not complex. I even watched in dismay a video with the PM gowned and watching his father during the covid pandemic, and wondered why there wasn’t more aggression in dealing with Mr. Browne. So as old naeger say, “the same stick that hit the wild goat, the same stick will hit the tame.” Everyone in Antigua and Barbuda is just one illness away from the grave with SLMBC unable to deliver the most basic of services. This is very serious folks, and is not a partisan political matter. There’s a failed healthcare system among other things in Antigua and Barbuda.
And this is a sad reality for 90% of us.
One hospital in Antigua and the government can’t maintain it. Antigua just spent large sums on a one nation concert when the air conditioners having been working. Where is the priority?
Even the old Holberton Hospital wasn’t this bad. We should have kept the two going alongside each other for the benefit of all citizens and travellers alike.
Politicians thinking out ah dem backs#@/s once again!!!
With hindsight, I should have gone into politics instead of business, this current lot couldn’t run the country … OH WAIT!!!
