(PRESS RELEASE)

The Project Implementation Management Unit (PIMU) will be conducting a simulated road closure exercise as part of the ongoing Traffic Management Plan associated with work under the Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project.

This simulated exercise will close only a section of Dickenson Bay Street: from the intersection of Friars Hill Road and Dickenson Bay Street to Hilda Davis Drive (the road that passes in front of Princess Margret Secondary School) and will impact mainly vehicles commuting to and from the Antigua Port Authority.

The plan is for the simulation to last 24 hours, closing a section of the road at 6:00am on Monday 30thJuly to 6:00am on Tuesday 31 July 2018.

PRO for the Project Implementation Management Unit (PIMU), Shawn Thomas said:

“The diversion routes will be specific for heavy duty equipment leaving the port while filled and a separate route for containers returning to the port after offloads. A separate route is identified for the diversion of lightweight vehicles.

Thomas urges road users to “be mindful of the fact that a project of this magnitude will result in some amount of traffic congestion and calls on drivers to avoid parking along byroads or main roads both during the simulation and construction phases of the ongoing roadwork on both Friars Hill Road and Sir George Walter Highway.

The road closure will allow the Traffic Management Committee (TMC) to assess road user behavior before roadwork begins takes place on that section of Friars Hill Road.

The project is being made possible through grant funding of 13.9 million pounds from the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Partnership Fund (UKCIF). Oversight is being provided by the Department for International Development. The grant funding is being administered by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has committed US $11 million dollars towards the project.
