Sex Offender Register Bill Implementation Delayed, Public Access and Penalties Outlined

0

Despite the passing of the Sex Offender Register Bill, residents are still unable to track sex offenders as the system is not yet operational.

Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin mentioned that all preparatory work has been completed, with an imminent announcement on the commencement of the process.

The Sex Offenders Register Bill (2022), passed in November, aims to reduce sexual reoffending by monitoring convicted sex offenders and sharing their information with relevant authorities.

It allows individuals to request confirmation from the Commissioner of Police regarding the sex offender status of a named individual.

While public access to this information is permitted, any misuse carries severe penalties, including a fine of $10,000 or imprisonment for three years for obtaining information under false pretences, misusing obtained information, or maliciously disseminating details from the register.
