The country’s newly opened magistrate’s court has been forced to close its doors by midday each day due to an ongoing sewage problem, disrupting proceedings and intensifying pressure on the justice system.

Only remand hearings and a handful of witness testimonies are being heard before staff and defendants are sent away. The curtailed schedule has caused a backlog of cases, leaving lawyers, witnesses and accused persons increasingly frustrated.

Attorney Wendel Alexander said the disruption was “time-wasting and time-consuming” and warned that the knock-on effects were being felt across the criminal justice process.

He noted that many practitioners are racing to resolve matters before the Criminal Assizes begin in mid-September, but with the magistrate’s court operating for only half the day, progress is stalling.

The sewage issue has yet to be fixed, with attorneys and court users urging immediate government intervention to restore full operations.

  1. The Magistrates Court was transferred to Graysfarm in April 2019 while serious upgrades was being undertaken to the High Street Headquarters. At a ceremony held on September 16th 2024 at which Magistrate Dexter Wason and Attorney General Benjamin was present, the building was handed back over to be used as the chief judicial office of the Magistrates. Fast forward a few months later, the building .have to be closed because of sewage issues. Who is really examining these work in order to ensure that we get value for money. It’s tax payers dollars that is being used to renovate and refurbish them. Government doesn’t mean free and every tax dollar that is wasted means dollars available at Medical Benefits for medicines and less monies to fix the roads. We take waste too lightly in this place.
