Seven earthquakes recorded northeast of Antigua over the weekend

A cluster of seismic events caught the attention of regional authorities over the weekend as seven earthquakes were recorded in the water’s northeast of Antigua.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre reported that these tremors occurred within a concentrated area, approximately 89 to 91 kilometres (55 to 57 miles) off the island’s northeastern coast.

The series of quakes varied in intensity, with the most significant being a magnitude 4.2 event.

This was the strongest in the sequence but there were no reports of it being felt by residents on Antigua and Barbuda.

While earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the Caribbean region, which sits on several tectonic plate boundaries, the concentration of multiple events in such a short time frame and localized area is noteworthy.

Seismologists at the UWI Seismic Research Centre are closely monitoring the situation for any potential follow-up activity.
