Senator Lamin Newton has urged citizens to embrace personal growth and reject hate and jealousy, following his graduation from the University of the West Indies (UWI).

In a reflective message shared after completing his studies, Senator Newton said people should focus on becoming “better than they were yesterday” and use their experiences to inspire others rather than seek to “destroy” them.

“We must always strive to be better than we were yesterday. That should be an individual responsibility and aspiration,” he said. “Our intentions should never be hinged on any attempt to destroy others, but instead to inspire others.”

Looking back on his journey, the senator described his university years as a period of learning and personal testing.

He said the experience had taught him to remain focused despite “noise and distractions,” adding that criticism and doubt had strengthened his resolve.

“I was laughed at, belittled and criticised. However, I never allowed that to break my focus and resolve,” he wrote.

Senator Newton also used the moment to address broader social issues, saying that some people had “adopted bad behaviours along the way” and allowed hate and jealousy to shape their outlook.

“The time has come for ‘you’ to let go of the hate and jealousy — it does you no good,” he said. “I want to be the source of encouragement and inspiration for ‘you’. Nothing is beyond your reach… I did it and ‘you’ can do it too.”

The senator’s remarks have drawn attention online, with many supporters congratulating him on his academic achievement and praising his call for self-reflection and positivity.

Senator Newton, completed his studies at UWI as part of his ongoing commitment to public service and personal development.

  1. Instead Lamin take the time to celebrate himself and his accomplishments, he chose to drop wud for Serpent. Lamin need to stop being so condescending

  2. Just graduating and this is the best you can do. This hate talk stuff was inappropriate Mr.Newton. This is not how you should celebrate such an incredible milestone. You need to apologize and remove this statement. You are a young and upcoming politician and needs to reach across the aisle.
If you are going to beat Pringle, you will have to win the independents and some of the UPP voters. Adversarial and hate speech will not get you across the line.
