Senator Obsert Frederick, who is set to succeed Sir Gerald Watt as Speaker of the House of Representatives, reflected on his time in the Senate and expressed gratitude for the support he has received over the years. Frederick, who has served in the Senate since 2014, took the opportunity to thank his colleagues as he prepares to transition into his new role.

Addressing the Senate, Frederick stated, “Madam President, I am not standing here to debate the bill. I just want to crave your indulgence and ask your permission to say a few words. It is now public knowledge that I will be transitioning to another area of public service, and this might be my last sitting in this honorable house.”

Frederick’s remarks highlighted his deep appreciation for the camaraderie and support he experienced during his decade-long tenure in the Senate. “I came into this honorable house in 2014, and it has been an experience that I would not change for anything,” he said. He went on to express special thanks to Senate President Alincia Williams-Grant, acknowledging her leadership and mentorship since they both entered their roles.

“Madame President, I want to single you out especially. When I came into this house, you also came in as President of the Senate, and I want to express my profound gratitude to you for your leadership and mentoring,” Frederick remarked. “You have done so much to expand my horizon. You have given me opportunities that I never thought would have been possible. It has helped me to be a better debater, a better person in general.”

Frederick also shared his optimism for the future, noting the ambitious plans that lie ahead for the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda. “Madame President, I’m looking forward to continue to work with you. I know the great plans you have for the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda, and I’m looking forward to us working together to make all those plans become reality,” he said. “If you’re successful, it will make our Parliament a model not only in this region but in the entire world.”

As he prepares for the next phase of his public service career, Frederick assured his Senate colleagues and the staff of Parliament that they would not be rid of him entirely. “Madame Clerk and Deputy, you’re not getting rid of me. I will still be around,” he joked, adding that he looks forward to continuing to contribute to the success of Parliament in his new role.

Frederick concluded his remarks by extending heartfelt thanks and blessings to his colleagues, stating, “May God continue to bless all of us in our future endeavors.”

Senator Frederick is expected to take over from Sir Gerald Watt as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the coming weeks, marking a new chapter in his distinguished career in public service.
