Senator Dwayne George Has Tendered His Resignation from the Upper House
The Prime Minister, authorized under the Antigua and Barbuda Constitution to appoint Senators and to withdraw appointments to the Senate, received from Senator Dwayne George a letter of resignation from the Senate.
The letter indicated that effective September 29, 2023, Honourable Dwayne George resigns from the Senate in order to pursue the election to the Parliament for the seat of St. Mary’s South Constituency. That seat was made vacant by the elected representative, who was a civil servant on the day of his Nomination, 28 December 2022, and failed to resign on a day prior.
That failure triggered a lawsuit in the Election Court after the 18th January 2023 general elections; the elected representative resigned months following rather than face the High Court, causing a vacancy in the Parliament which is to be filled within 120 days by holding a by-election.
The public is aware that the latest date by which a by-election can be held is 26 October 2023. Historically, elections are not held in Antigua and Barbuda on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, since these are worship days for significant portions of the population.
The Prime Minister has indicated that he will announce the date on Saturday night, 30 September 2023, at a public rally to be held in Urlings Village. Senator Dwayne George will speak to the people of St. Mary’s South at the rally.
