The seaports will remain open for business despite the government’s announcement that the V. C. Bird International Airport will close midnight on Thursday.

“The port would probably be the last thing that the government will consider closing and the simple fact that it’s the gateway to feeding the island. The location where we get all our supplies”, said Darwin Telemaque, Manager of the Antigua & Barbuda Port Authority.

The Port Manager told state media “if there’s ever gonna be a discussion like that, obviously it’s not gonna be a port or the Port Minister’s discussion”.

He added such a decision would have to come from the level of Cabinet and would require widespread consultation.

“Significant entities will be involved in that like Customs and Immigration and all of that because we are now making a determination to lock Antigua out from the rest of the world entirely”, he said.

Telemaque underscored the importance of the keeping the port open saying, “it is necessary for these suppliers to replenish those stock and by doing to so provide some comfort to the citizens of Antigua & Barbuda that there will be shelves stocked with food and supplies”.

  1. Completely agree and congratulate the Port Authorities for keeping the Antigua life line open.
No mention however of how you will ensure it doesn’t become a Death line, but allowing Convid virus in?
Are you able to manage segregating the people who arrive on the cargo vessels and protect your Customs personnel who have to meet with them and exchange documents and conversation?
Last thing we need is an outbreak of the virus at our Docks!
