Sean Bird delivered a deeply emotional tribute during the V.C Bird Day celebrations, reflecting on the life and legacy of his late father, Ivor G.T. Bird, who passed away on December 3, 2024.
Known as “The Silent One,” Ivor Bird was a media pioneer in Antigua and Barbuda, founding ZDK Liberty Radio 97.1 FM and contributing significantly to the nation’s cultural and political discourse.
Sean Bird began his speech by sharing a heartfelt regret: not expressing his love for his father more often during his lifetime.
“I regret that I did not say, ‘I love you, Daddy,’ enough before he died,” he admitted. He recounted how his father never hesitated to express his affection, often saying, “Ah yuh me love!” even during moments of discord.
Reflecting on the family’s legacy, Sean Bird highlighted the values of service, resilience, and unity instilled by his father and grandfather, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., Antigua and Barbuda’s first Prime Minister.
He described his father as a man of quiet strength who laid a foundation of service to the community. “Service is not self, but the determination of public service for the interest of all,” Sean remarked, echoing the values passed down through generations of the Bird family.
Sean also shared personal anecdotes about his grandfather, who was instrumental in shaping the labor movement in Antigua and Barbuda. He recalled being introduced to politics and community service at a young age, describing moments of learning and mentorship that emphasized the importance of standing on the shoulders of giants. “It is on that foundation we build a house and improve upon it,” he said, urging continued respect for the history and sacrifices of labor leaders.
The speech also touched on the legacy of the Antigua Trades and Labor Union and the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party, movements deeply intertwined with his family’s history. Sean reflected on the need to better honor and understand the labor movement’s contributions, noting, “I don’t think I understood enough what labor means until recently, hearing so many stories about my father’s impact and the movement’s history.”
Sean Bird expressed gratitude for the love and support he has received from the labor movement and his community. He reaffirmed his commitment to carrying forward the values his father and grandfather championed, urging others to remember and build upon their shared legacy.
The tribute, delivered with honesty and vulnerability, honored Ivor G.T. Bird’s legacy as a media trailblazer, athlete, and patriot.
