During a speech at the VC Bird Day celebrations on Monday, Sean Bird reflected on his political journey, including a brief period of estrangement from the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP).
Without directly mentioning his involvement with the United Progressive Party (UPP), Bird spoke candidly about being “sniffed out” by labor supporters, a reference to the challenges he faced during his time outside the movement and his eventual return.
Acknowledging the tension and division that marked that period, Bird shared how he had come to rediscover the significance of the labor movement and its foundational role in Antigua and Barbuda’s development.
“I don’t think I understood enough what labor means until recently, hearing so many stories about my father’s impact and the movement’s history,” he admitted. His remarks highlighted his renewed appreciation for the legacy of his family and the labor movement’s principles of service and unity.
Bird described how he was welcomed back into the labor fold with open arms, recounting moments when supporters urged him to return. “How can I not receive the love of labor?” he asked, referencing the encouragement he received from individuals who reminded him of the movement’s values and its role in shaping the nation.
Drawing on his family’s legacy, Bird emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by his grandfather, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., and other labor pioneers. He reflected on how their vision and dedication to service laid the foundation for the country’s progress. “Service is not self, but the determination of public service for the interest of all,” he said, underscoring his commitment to those principles.
The speech also touched on the labor movement’s strength and resilience, with Bird calling on supporters to continue building on its legacy. “There’s always going to be a fight. There’s always going to be disagreements. But the foundation of labor is not just a political party—it’s a movement,” he said.
While Bird did not explicitly address his time with the UPP, his remarks carried a tone of reconciliation and renewed loyalty to the ABLP. He urged attendees to support current leaders, including Prime Minister Gaston Browne, while maintaining respect for the movement’s history and core values.

Once you know you have a root I believe that’s where you should stay. I hope you don’t make another decision to leave the ABLP again.
Are these just words to clear the air? in my thoughts they are only polluting it. You left the ABLP to run on the UPP ticket knowing all that you know about the labour party being then root of the family. now you’re back over on the ABLP ticket saying words to prove what? i guess Antigua and Barbuda will never know.
What’s there to say but do you Sean. It’s politics we don’t expect anything better.
Sean I have no issues with you or your decision. That’s really on you. But anything Devine cannot be linked with politics. You love your dad I great that. But don’t make it seem as if he was a spotless hero. Nor was any of the birds. I’m sorry if I sound harsh but truth is truth
Tax payers you will be paying for the upkeep of ZDK again. Just like WTP and Pointe FM. This ABLP can’t survive without Tax payers money. Little Bird Boy you have no shame. Hope you get the creative enrichment this time around, because the last time your lazy ass didn’t show up to work. Just ask the Gasman leader how the creative enrichment is done, so you can bail out your dead legacy.
Let me hereby remind all of you with short memories.Gaston Browne, did not want any Birds on his Party’s ticket. He said so with no cheese in his mouth. It was okay for Maria Browne not a Bird to run.
