Junior Chamber International Antigua (JCI Antigua) has once more shown how community activism and volunteerism can lead to social development. Earlier this week, the local chapter of this international organization made a heartwarming contribution to the Bendals Primary School as they officially opened the institution’s first ever “Sick By”.

JCI Antigua’s “Adopt a school” program has been a staple campaign in the organization’s community outreach project lineups. This year, the Bendals Primary school is the lucky recipient of their volunteer work and activities.

In less than five months, an unused classroom was efficiently retrofitted and stocked with the essentials to serve the rural school’s interim health and wellness need. A sickbay is basically a room that has been designated for the treatment and accommodation of students who may fall ill during school hours. The micro hospital is stock with the necessary first aid equipment to ensure that all emergencies dealt with in the best possible way at the school.

Given the remote location of the school to the country’s main hospital and proximity to a quarry, JCI Antigua thought it best to equip the school with a facility that can add to the overall care of the students during school hours. “Bendals Primary school may not be a popular school because of its location in rural Antigua, we thought it best to recognize this institution which has produced a number of hard-working Antiguans. We hope that with our adaptation of the school for the year, other community groups may step forward as well.” President Tammie Gage commented.

The necessary fixtures, paintings, aesthetics along with clinic size beds, bed fittings, cupboards, carpeting, blood pressure testing machine, Ivy Pole, thermometers and an array of books and first aid kits were all donated by the JCI Antigua chapter.

The official opening of the Sick Bay falls within the organization’s week of activities which started on May 5th and ends on the 11th. The ceremony also witnessed the group donated a series of books to the school from their book drive.

JCI Antigua President Tammie Gage and Vice President Leycia Samuels along with the visiting West Indies President Khaleid Holder took part in the special ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official opening.

  1. I hope the students will now not pretend to be sick all the time, just to go to the sick bay
