A former recipient of the Prime Minister Scholarship Programme, Kemal Nicholson, on Friday made a monetary donation to the Mount St. John Medical Centre for the purchasing of personal protective equipment (PPE) items for the nurses at the hospital.

“Antigua and Barbuda has done a lot for me by providing me with a scholarship enabling me to gain my first degree in Political Science and certification in the Russian language.  It is only fitting that during this time when our nurses are at the forefront waging a war against the dreaded COVID virus that we support them in anyway possible.  It is my pleasure to give back to a country that has done so much for me,” Nicholson said.

The contribution of EC$10, 000 was presented by Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Programme, Maurice Merchant on behalf of Nicholson who now resides and works in Moscow, Russia, as First Secretary in the Embassy of Grenada to the Russian Federation.

Accepting the donation was Director of Nursing at the Mount St. John Medical Centre, Jacqueline Jno Baptiste who outlined that the donation is timely and it is commendable that Nicholson has seen it fit to remember the nurses at this time when they are working around the clock to ensure that citizens, residents and visitors remain safe and healthy.

“I urge others to follow Nicholson’s lead and give back to their community and to non-profit organisations.  There are many institutions and groupings such as the nurses who could benefit from the goodwill of benefactors,” Jno Baptiste stated.

Nicholson, who credits his alma mater, the St. Joseph’s Academy for inculcating in him the need to be of service to others, has served as the student representative for Antiguan and Barbudan students in the Russian Federation.  During the COVID crisis he has been providing emotional and financial support to the student
