The Whenner Road man accused of using a hammer to inflict serious injury to a woman’s head will be in prison until October 18, the date for his committal proceedings.

Tony “Scar” Thomas can, however, be released before that date if a High Court judge grants him bail.

He made his first court appearance yesterday before Magistrate Ngaio Emmanuel in All Saints Magistrate’s Court.

Thomas is charged with the attempted murder of a 44-year-old Bolans woman, Laurie-Ann Hurst on August 6 at Ffryes Beach.

The police allege that the 47-year-old man attacked Hurst with the carpentry hand tool before fleeing the scene, and leaving her bleeding profusely from a head wound.

She was reportedly assisted by churchgoers who were camping on the beach.

Thomas went into hiding forcing police to issue a wanted bulletin for his arrest.

Officers attached to the Bolans and Johnson’s Point police stations captured and took him into custody after spotting him in some bushes in the Cashew Hill area last Friday about 5:40 pm.
