In a short ceremony on Friday, President Julian Wilkins of the Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown presented a cheque of USD 5000 to the Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue (ABSAR).
The gesture was made possible by the recent heroic efforts of Travis West and Joseph Nunes of the Team Antigua Pairs having chosen Rotary Sundown as its Charity for the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.
In his speech, President Wilkins recognized the importance of ABSAR through their role of offering search and rescue services twenty four hours per day to persons who have found themselves in need of assistance while sailing in Antigua and Barbuda and the surrounding waters.
He further stated that Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown was delighted to have made the donation and through this effort, he hoped that the funds would assist ABSAR to execute the urgent repairs needed to their rescue craft.
President Julian added that ABSAR had presented invoices to the club specifying the items that were needed and, without any hesitation, the Board agreed to fund the purchase. Fellow Rotarian and CEO of Paradise Boat Sales Paul Ryan in his effort to support Team Antigua Pairs and they work through Rotary, donated USD500 toward the equipment needed.
The very thankful and elated Travis and Joseph – Team Antigua Pairs, were present and expressed great joy that through their 3000 nautical mile row across the Atlantic, they were able to make an even greater impact to those in need through hands of service and voluntarism.
ABSAR representative “ABSAR volunteer Richard Fear accepted the check on the Organization’s behalf and expressed how grateful they were to be chosen as the beneficiary of such kindness. The Organization’s Motto “So That Others May Live” perfectly complements one of the core values of Rotary which is to “Service above Self.”
